I don't understand what is happening here. On every other forum I visit (to be fair, I never really venture into games forums), I rarely see such vitriol, hyperbole or knee jerking as do I here. This could be because the average age of the forum members elsewhere is a hell of a lot higher than it is here. Before I get flamed, that is not a dig, an insult or any kind of negatively aimed comment. It's just an observation.
Anyway, to the reason for this post. When I first learned of this key code reduction, I was slightly concerned. My immediate thought was, as many would agree, Trion are forcing a "pay-to-win" scenario. But, instead of jumping into the forum and blowing my top, I looked into what has happened. And this is what I've found:
- Ambient/dynamic missions don't seem to hand out keycodes anymore
- Some contracts/persuits now give keycodes - I've seen two persuits that reward with 8 keycodes!
- I have found no other changes that would "force" one to pay real world money to succeed with this game
So, my next reaction was a concern on how I would now earn keycodes to purchase synergy mod caches and tiered lock boxes. But then I remembered I can pay for keycodes using ark salvage. Here is an example from last night after the patch:
I completed four ambient missions. On one of them, a raider camp, I was rewarded with four item drops - 2 green and 2 white. Two other missions dropped two items and the last one dropped one item. That amounts to a mean average of 2.25 per mission. Let's be "glass is half empty" about this and round down to the nearest whole number, so that's 2 item drops per mission. If we assume that's one white and one green, that gives us a total of 750 ark salvage. With other random ark salvage drops, that means 10 missions will get you a tier two lock box. That's not including any key codes you pick up from co-op, contracts, pursuits, side missions, main missions and ark falls. Let's assume you do four ambient missions and an ark fall; 3 keycodes from ambient missions (ark salvage used to buy keycodes) and 5 from an arkfall. There is your tier 2 lock box.
Having considered it carefully, and from what I can remember, I had to do five or six ambient missions to earn 8 keycodes.
The way I see it, there isn't much more to do. Yes, you end up using precious ark salvage. But if the game was easy, it wouldn't be so addictive.
My only problem, for want of a better word, is the weights on which rarity you get isn't quite right. I have opened a lot of lock boxes and not received any oranges.
That's my thoughts anyway. It'll fall on deaf ears because most of you complainers just want to complain for the sake of it. You're looking for a war to join and this is it.
