I'm curious, why make the game so far away from where the actual action takes place. If I know Syfy, the series will circle around that town while the main characters are put no-escape situations, but by the end of the episode they come out on top... come to think of it, that kinda sums up all the Syfy series that come to mind. And the name of the series is Defiance so I have doubts about it being about SF. Of course, I could be wrong.
Anyway, I kinda doubt there will be so much focus on SF. Why is that? The only reason I've heard was that players may kill a character in game and be upset at the fact that it's still alive in the series. Are we all 5 years old? Do we not understand how this works? Doubt any sane person will demand you "kill" a character in the series just because he offed him or her in the game world.
You said you want to hold a certain level of "contact" between the game and the series, but this just seems like a lazy solution. Granted you would have to release many updates to reflect the state of the series in the game world, but this is the endevour you took upon yourselves when you decided to try something like this.
I hope, that one day, if the game goes well and, especially, if the series go well, you will see fit to open the town of Defiance to players, cause that's the ultimate way for us to actually feel "close" to the series.
