there's nothing about the show itself that indicates it's pricey. in fact everything about it from the acting to writing to cgi says nothing but how much they were focused on the bottom line.
the game is similar.
more expensive that the average reality tv show? sure, those are extremely cheap to produce though. it's like comparing the cost of a used car to a bike from walmart. ofc the used car is pricey by comparison.
That's actually pretty good.
The Sopranos on HBO only had 3.45 on its premiere. Doubled its average for the second season.
Only flaw i see with the first episode is , they should have had it free on xbox live , psn, hula, amazon, and netflix , 2 days after the launch with 2 breaks for ads one at the start and one at the hour mark.
only takes into account US viewers, the show premiered in the EU yesterday,

IGN - Damien Bloodwing
Defiance hasn't even premiered everywhere yet.. Besides, amazon made a mistake releasing the first episode free before the premiere, meaning it was also out on "the bay" and other torrent sites. That might have affected the numbers as well.

"First episode in Syfy’s new drama is channel’s most-watched scripted series premiere in seven years; players have logged more than 6 million hours in tie-in game thus far."

You're absolutely right to correct him.
But if I may point out something at a slight tangent:
AMC had Mad Men and Breaking Bad generating significant buzz for the channel before they released The Walking Dead. People are more likely to spend the time watching a show if it comes from a good pedigree (another Joss Whedon show, anything by HBO, etc.). Syfy's "Mad Men" or "Breaking Bad" was Battlestar Galactica, a show that, despite the nostalgia effect of a remake only had a 3.1m Nielson rating for its premiere. An original IP has a distinct disadvantage compared to that, and it still managed what, 2.7? In large part that probably relates to the success of Battlestar Galactica, but now that those people have watched the premiere they will make up their minds to watch more, and to tell other people about it, based on the merits of the show itself.
We'll see how the Nielson average works out for this season, and if it bumps up to double or more on the next. If it does, we're likely in for five or six seasons. If it doesn't, well, Battlestar had a degrading Nielson and it still managed four seasons.
