Ego rating vs Ego Level rating

I was trying to figure this stuff out myself. What im more interested in, is that it would seem those of us who do the main questline, hammer out all the side quests, and ignore "challenges" are not going to get a ton of points from pursuits. Took a look at my pursuits today and it looks like not doing the races, defenses etc is costing me well over 100 ego points. Problem is I just don't care for them. So long story short I think the higher number includes pursuits things of that nature, lower number is your ego level from xp?
