The huge difference here is that content sticks around for nearly a month and is usually almost entirely low-level and non-gated.

Also, what's funny about this event, is I have no idea what is, what it's for, or the lore around it. A simple data recorder explaining it would be nice, but this event means nothing to me.

This is no different from holiday events in wow. If you miss it you miss it. **** and wait for the next one. JFC people whining about the dumbest sh*t. You're not going to be able to finish everything, that's a fact. Get over it.

It would be nice if capture and hold was available so we could finish them. Done everything else but that!

instead of all these complains if you are on Xbox, send me a friends request and I'll let you jump to me in san Francisco to open up the warp point. then you can get the pursuits without having to do the mission to cross the bridge.

Cripes, I don't even want to go to San Francisco until I've progressed that far in the story naturally. Look, a huge part of what keeps an MMO interesting for me while doing missions is visiting new locations I haven't seen before. Key words there are "visiting new locations I haven't seen before while doing missions". Randomly visiting new locations before the storyline sends me to play there spoils that, and makes things less exciting when I revisit the area to do a mission.

I know some people like to explore the entire map while they're level 1 in other MMOs, but that's just not how I like to play. I want my "ooh! That's new!" feeling to last for as much of the game as possible.
I understand. I played only a few story missions every day and got to San Fran at 1K ego. But you'll miss the content if you don't.

As far as I remember it varied widely from seasonal to seasonal. Some of them for only a week. Apart from the san fran stuff, the episode stuff in defiance isn't "gated" either.

Well its explained right in Episode 1 of the show, which is why its an Episode 1 tie in. But it also explains it on the character select, on the website, and in recorders you can pick up for one of the pursuits.

But short answer is its to remember the end of the Pale Wars.

Actually for some of the events in wow like All Hallows End you need to be max lvl to participate in the Headless Horseman event as the items you get scale to the very maximum lvl of the content plus the mount. Some of the other parts are gated but you have quite a bit of time to catch up to do them.
