Leave the small bugs...they make the crystals go down faster.
Blows my mind that people keep killing them even though they lady specifically says that they are "opening a weak spot on the crystal after they bite it"
Bottom line:
The big bubble 'weak spots' come from the small hellbugs

Some people want to annoy others and kill them knowing they are needed to weaken the crystal, others kill all they see in an effort to come 1st on the damage/kills etc it will never change unfortunatly.
There's also the third group (of which I am part) that doesn't bother to listen to the instructions and doesn't know any better.

Since the Ark Fall count resets per ark, and you need to get 2500 kills in a single major fall, I am guess some of them might be just trying to get that pursuit completed
Another reason people might be killing them is to get ammo.
