Because Defiance is in a completely different genre (MMO).

And that's why I have bought hardly any game on console anymore the past few years. Except for Skyrim, The witcher II GotY edition, Mass Effect 3 and Halo 4.

Defiance is a MMO + FPS, so it gets compared With other MMO's out there and not just single player fps games like Bioshock.

Bioshock isn't a MMO though. it is a single player game. There are different criteria for rating a MMO and a single player game. You might as well compare apple with oranges.

They'll give the next CoD a 10 though even though they produce the exact same game every single year for eternity..automatic 10

WAR had a LOT of content, was the first game to have a working open world quest system which following MMO's all copied, had an awesome artstyle and competative PVP and from what I remember, a lot of PVE, multple races and classes each with different starting areas and unique quests.

Defiance has lamps. Lamps that you launch into the sky.

    Lamps.
I play WAR from time to time for fast easy PvP that you can jump right into, usually to kill time between playing other things. Aside from the PvP the game is pretty much useless. Even the devs realize this and have not so much as updated rewards for PvE content to match PvP reward changes that have been done for years. I bring it up because they gave it a 9 in their review and well, lets take a look at WAR at launch. Here are just a few things I can remember from launch:

    - 2 missing classes promised at launch
    - 4 of 6 capital cities missing at launch (and still not in to this day)
    - Fortress battles causing ENTIRE servers to crash. Not just a few players or something. The server itself just completely down.
    - Mail - taking 5-10 minutes to load a single mail
    - Stealth broken in several ways, still is to this day though they fixed about half of the issues
    - Terribly bugged pets... still bugged
    - Participation system for PQs broken, still semi-broken
    - Mob AI very buggy and easily abused (LOTD tomb runs anyone?)
    - Extremely imbalanced classes
    - Loads of broken / buggy skills, several of them still that way
    - Range & LoS bugs, yep still there too
    - Several bugged quests & PQs
    - Lots of performance issues / poor optimization

Many of these things, and a long list of other issues, either took anywhere from several weeks to a couple of years for them to fix. Several known issues from beta & launch still have not been fixed.

While I agree the game had quite a bit of content, much of that content was exactly what people are now complaining about with Defiance. Kill X of this, fetch this, interact with that. While PQs were new and pretty cool at first, even they consisted of that exact same thing. Hell, the higher level PQs consist of tasks like kill 150 of this mob and 100 of another mob for stage 1, now go activate these 5 objects within 10 minutes for stage 2, now kill this Hero and his guards for stage 3. Lower level PQs are much different... you only need to kill 40 mobs, then activate 3 objects, then kill a Champion instead of a hero.

Then within a year of the game launching all of that content become irrelevant and ignored. The rewards you receive are about 2/3 as effective (if youre lucky) as equal level gear gained from PvP due to them changing PvP gear requirements and not touching the rest of the game.

On the plus side, even with some of those issues, PvP can still be extremely fun (still has some balance issues, but not nearly as bad as at launch). If the entire game had consisted of PvP, and judging based simply on that, yeah it deserved a good score. But since that wasnt the case, and due to all the technical issues which were around for a very long time, it sure wasnt deserving of a 9. Kind of evident by the fact the game went from something like 70+ servers to about half of those shutting down within 6 months or so, then more continuing to shut down every few months... now 2 servers total left.

Lets ignore IGN for a second still 15 critics/review sites have given Defiance mediocre scores. With 2 negative and 3 to 4 positive. IGN is just one of many and they didn't even outright called it a horrible game. They called it an average MMO with potential.
Maybe you haven't noticed this, but I havent exactly been complaining about the scores that have been given to defiance. Personally, I rate it around a 7, potential 7.5 - 8 with some improvements. Its not like I am going around claiming it's the best game ever or anything. I know it has it's issues, and I am waiting to see where it goes ove rthe next few months.

What I really have an issue with is the absurdity of some of the things said in some of the reviews.

Just speaking of the IGN review in particular, they knock the game for having repetitious kill / fetch quests. Yet in most other games, including the 2 he mentioned (WoW and SWTOR), kill / fetch quests are somehow magically transformed into this unique and exciting thing that make up 75% of the game and get them very high scores.

It's like watching one of those taste test commercials or something. Where someone says they prefer 1 brand over another. Then the taste test shows they actually liked the 2nd brand better when they didnt know which was which. Like, if they reskinned and renamed Defiance as something else, like a new World of Warcraft spinoff or something, suddenly they would enjoy the taste of Defiance much more.

I also have an issue with the preconceived notions many of the reviewers have. Basically an expectation that "this game should be this way because other games do it this way" rather than accepting that it is intentionally different in some aspects and not meant to cater to the same crowd of players as those other games. Trion already has Rift... why would they make a competitor to their own game?

A badly ported (PC version) that was clearly rushed out while still in beta. 8 jillion data recorders to find and much ballyhoo'ed Arkfalls that yield...

    ...Shields and nades.

    IGN was generous.

I like you Jeronan. You sound like me. I thought I was alone I have all those games as well. I very rarely buy full price games because it is all the same dumbed down tosh. Defiance has been the exception. I have just been buying old games for cheap that I have not got.
