I respectfully disagree. During the story my weapons stopped changing at around 100 ego (about when I finished the episode missions and got the AR I used to beat Nim) and I was never forced to adapt my play style.

"the vast intervening stretches are filled with some of the dullest and most repetitious quest design I’ve experienced in an MMO"

Thus we come to the core problem with reviews of Defiance. They keep comparing the gameplay of a TPS to point and click RPGs. Shooters are repetitive from an in game standpoint. Everything will involve shoot X and don't get shot by Y. You might as well freaking compare a platformer to a racing game.

Defiance could do more, A LOT MORE (vehicles are underexplored, there could be a wider variety of melee enemy and projectile types, AI needs improvement and less aimbot, arkfalls seriously need mob numbers to scale with crowd size), but as it stands you have all the core mechanics and variety of any shooter.

Edit: Except they left out any god awful stealth segments, wall hugging, and QTEs and nothing of value was lost.

That's a bad thing? Why would you want to be FORCED. I personally ran into all kinds of different weapon types, nano effects, and weapons with good bonuses.. I also cycled through multiple loadouts with different weapon types entirely for completely different playstyles on the fly.. so I respectfully call BS, sorry; there's no way you didn't run across new more interesting weapons with better bonuses.. oh well.. to each their own I guess.

Nonsense. Genre is an excuse for limited gameplay options in the side missions. It took me 5 seconds to wonder why there are no convoy escorts or ambushes. None of the enemies in Defiance even have notable pathing.

There ARE ambushes if you'd bother to play the random events, I can't count the number of times I've had a bunch of skitterlings and warriors or the odd archer pop up out of the ground around me (though usually EGO alerts you before they spawn) and there are escort missions too sadly (protect NPC X as he goes around from console to console). I'd count every other enemy group spawn as an ambush too if they didn't take 30 seconds each and come with a flashy entrance and an EGO alert. If you want legitimate surprise there is the ambush at the opposite end of the Golden Gate and any time snipers drop your shield in one shot.

If you mean escort as in escort across the landscape or escort a convoy then you need to stop talking, nobody likes those.

I will respectfully disagree. The only thing that changes is the fact you can have multiple load outs with different powers (cloak etc). The enemies pretty much remain the same and the 'new areas' look identical

I never hit a point where I had to look at my play style and wonder if I could change something to make it easier. I should point out my EGO was about 300 when I finished the main and side quests. I didn't really see many new weapons in that time

I mean ambushes you can lay for enemies. The Golden Gate ambush is lost if you drive past it :P

Obviously I like escorts, no one likes those indeed!

I don't see how that's even possible. You can't completely all main and side missions and end with 300 ego. I ended with over 800 and that's with all main and side missions completed. The missions alone will give you enough ego, pursuits, and weapon skill upgrades to be well over 300.. I'm not sure how you're playing, but apparently ridiculously boringly lol.. try different things, you're doing your self a great injustice by not experiencing other things.
