I may be mistaken, but i really wish games like this would get reviews some time down the road when they have had a chance to smooth out. Then again, I guess with the rate of production these days, its all about the initial product before people are too impatient and move on.
With the amount of streams and pre-release information these days, its a shame that people still judge games based off critics and not for themselves :S

Defiance isn't fully voice acted, just the story missions. SW:TOR had individual voice acting for the vast majority of the side quests, too.
I enjoy Defiance, it's fun, but by more objective standards it is pretty mediocre and unpolished at the moment. Really poor social tools (I include an auction house in this), bugs and glitches (in an hour of playing, I press ESC about five to seven times because of the loot/reload jittering), no competitive PvP aspects (ratings, titles, rewards), a lottery in place of a loot system, no bank or stash, side quests that all follow the exact same pattern, lack of enemy variety, level-ups feeling unspectacular (I don't even use my ego upgrades every time they are available), and so on.
The story may not matter to you, but I do appreciate at least semi-interesting plots in my MMOs. WoW had a TON of good writing (that most people skipped, but still, not all of us shy away from reading text), for example. I find myself farming keys instead of continuing with the main story at the moment, because it doesn't really interest me at all and didn't pull me in, which is partly because of the simplistic quest mechanics (click on three things, kill mutants, click on one thing -- rinse and repeat, like the side quests).
I think the reason why I'm having fun is because of how the shooting feels. That is well done. I like the weapon types (well, I like the shotguns, LMGs and ARs). The combat is good. I also like aimlessly driving around in a sandbox (enjoyed it more when there was an incentive to do emergencies, which they removed). But it is no surprise to me that the game is getting 5/10 and 6/10 reviews. It's not because the reviewers are paid off. It's because Defiance is unpolished and average.
Grass. Weird alien trees. Farms. Docks. Once you've encountered these things you've pretty much seen it all. The only way the story can be completed at a "good pace" is to leave your vehicle behind and do it on foot. And "rush in pew pew style" is better rewarded than taking your time and playing carefully. Often I don't bother killing everything if I don't have to because it's such a repetitive experience. And before you criticise my play style, the only weapons I don't use are LMGs and launchers.
I think this refers to the loadout issues, progress towards pursuits and skills being reset, weapons disappearing from inventories etc. Stuff that, when it happens, has cost you a lot of time. Like when Fallout: New Vegas crashes during an autosave and you lose an hour's worth of work. That kind of depressing.
Poor example, the Reaper is an advanced weapon you rarely encounter. If it DIDN'T feel powerful then Trion should wear dunce hats and sit in the corners of video game outlet stores so Defiance buyers have someone to throw their copy at. But even for a minigun, the Reaper is weak. The Firebreather is not a particularly impressive rocket launcher either.
Many of the guns don't deliver the kind of firepower you'd expect from their ilk. Semi-auto snipers, magnums, shotguns. All look cool and sound great from their descriptions but in practice they're weak and don't even sound impressive.

It's basics are that it is a third person shooter with character development aspects. Sure it could be wider on content/diversity so players don't lose interest, but why bother? They've already paid for it!
What detail? Oh, a van, a fire, some skulls. Yum yum, tasty copypasta.
Very interesting, and I don't think I've agreed with anyone on forums as much as I have this post. I've been gaming for a fair number of years, and it annoys me to no end when features that have been done and re-done numerous amount of times, send players into fits of excitement, especially when they've been done better. Lately I've just been giving examples to quell the excitement and shut them up, it works lol.

You pretty much answered the question yourself. Almost every point you said, you said something bad about the game but nothing good.
The game falls short in almost every aspect aside the shooting mechanics which are this games saving grace.
Missions, Progression, Longevity, Story, PVP, Customization - all "meh" at best.
You can't give a game an 8/10 just because it has good shooting.
If Defiance wants to get an 8/10 it is going to need to grow.

I am playing games for a reason, to have fun. I dont care about reviews, graphics, to be the best etc. In my first hours on the game i didnt bothered with anything, just shoot, drive, stop on the road and shoot again, explore the map, stop here and there and start shooting again. After 20+ hours i didnt even tested pvp and i like pvp.
So for me, Defiance so far is great gaming experience. For some it is not. I respect that but it didnt prevent me from buying the game. I did my research though and bought it for 32$ not full price. Totally worth those bucks.
I would give a 7/10 for now.
Best post on here, well said. I do enjoy the game, but not enough to give it an 8/10 at its current standing. I'm not a fan of ign's reviews but I'd only give this a 6 based on mmo standards as it utterly fails at the mmo aspect in every category.
Because even Tabula Rasa (which I was part of Closed beta until the servers shut Down) was a way better game then this one.
If this game lasts longer than that game has.... I would seriously be suprised.
Actually I'd argue with a lot of it.
# Major arkfalls are the definition of a zerg fest.
# While scaling (between weapon rarities and with increasing EGO rating) is done very well, item progression slows down a too much because of a lack of key fragment income ... for those that get only 2 oranges in almost 2000 EGO rating at least.
# My game runs almost bugfree, or at least without game breaking bugs. The ones I encountered this far where either tolerable (eg. floating crystals) or easy to work around (Cronkhite). My runner skill being at level 7 again is the only thing that's a tad annoying, although ... it levels itself without doing anything special.
# Shooting lacking a sense of power? It's a very random comment I do not understand. And oneshotting all standard mobs with AoE damage until San Francisco with well placed grenades at very high distance if you're good does not lack sense of power. And that's just an example, with good enough aim and equipment and high enough EGO you start tearing through mob packs very quickly.
# I liked the story and the missions you did made sense, the way you progressed through it slowly uncovered a new threat and every NPC had their own agenda. Collecting data recorders helps understanding what everything is about as well.
You were reminded of your own reasons for doing things a few times as well: You're Von Bachs payed thug and are pretty much treated as such.
Cutscenes could've been better on mimic, but there are enough laughs and the conversations add a lot, even without any chance for interaction.
# What I miss however is information on the Votans and the Pale Wars. There's not enough to read on either topic ... for example the different races and why the Votans landed on earth in the first place is touched only on the surface.
# I find the world makes a lot of sense and roaming was very fun before the removal of emergencies.
# Now crying about difficulty is just crying. If anything, most of the mob types above your standard type (eg. Mattock for 99ers) and elites could use a healthy buff in the rate of fire department and be more dangerous vs multiple players.
Getting hit by a single Blacklung for example takes a special kind of lazyness ... you can strafe without running or dodging and avoid any damage!
The "find the lieutenant mission" (can't recall the name) at the end of San Francisco ... that's how I expect a Lt. type mob to be.
