Anything that bring me deeper into a game is definitely a plus, if is lore or more background to the world I'm playing in that's even better. Unfortunately like quite a few other things in this game the introduction of "data recorders" could have been handle better.
This is of course my personal opinion, but like others have said I find the search for this items boring and uninteresting. There is no puzzle, skill or challenge to finding then except time invested. Looking in every crack and cranny does not make me feel smarter but it does make me question if I'm suffering from some type of OCD.
I would excuse it, if the world of defiance had an amazing interesting environment that would make the exploration worth while, at least for site-see. Only every other building is a clone of itself with a few exceptions around the world. So you have to excuse me if I'm less than trill about the prospect of aimlessly walking around until I trip over one of these recordings.
I think the problem with data recorders is that they're linked to rewards. It used to be you could just explore around and find cool things and the reward was the act of finding something cool. Then developers (CoH was one of the first to start doing this, I believe) started tying this activity into an achievement system.
Fast forward to now, where this kind of every-day MMO exploration has suddenly been paired with a reward and labeled as end game content. And the people who never liked doing this sort of thing to start with suddenly feel obligated to do it, and are understandably annoyed. And the players who did like doing this sort of thing are frustrated because they feel like games have lost the kind of exploration-magic they used to enjoy in lieu of some highly artificial and forced system.
Just because you want a straight up fight doesnt mean everyone does. All that will happen is they will put hordes of mobs round the data recorders to keep the complainers happy with a fight.
Every mmo has things for explorers and things to find. So many new comers to mmoland here and its obvious by the complaints lol

No. PLEASE keep the recorders and add MUCH more.
They are, aside from the story quests, only thing that expands the story, lore and universe in the game.
Keep em' coming!
Also, put up the info that the defiance website has in the game, such as info on races, timeline, that fake newspaper etc.
Dude that pursuit has GOT to be bugged for the killing blows. I've had like 6 now both Progenitors and the Mature Hellbug Hellion or the regular Hellbug Hellion where I get the bonus XP to pop when THEY pop and still neither is getting checked off. THIS IS THE MOST AGGRAVATING of pursuits to run down and have count. Its on my list of reasons I'm about to just take some time away from the bay area. Far as I'm concerned the damn Hellbugs can have the place til they fix these glitched features.
XBox Gamertag: NAPALM SUNRlSE (that "i" is actually a lowercase L, some *** has the actual name already and not even on XBOX, probably as a MSN LIVE id)
Character: Kayden Stryke; Human Female Outlaw; EGO: 387; Most Common Role: DPS and Mob Aggro Bait
Clan: Chaos Undivided (Leader: Ka0sP3nguin)
I love the data recorders. Do they need to be part of the area exploration pursuit?
YES. HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST OTHERWISE.
EXPLORING and discovering the HISTORY of an area is integral to knowing and understanding it.
Shooting at a thing does not give you more understanding in and of itself.
If you don't want to explore and find the data recorders, or even to look it up on youtube, don't do the exploration pursuit. You don't have to do it. It's entirely optional.
What about side missions that involve just running up to something and holding X. Seems just as boring.
