San Francisco looks like that because of a Terra Forming explosion, which pretty much is a Post Apocalyptic scene. From what I read.

Exactly my friend. If people actually watched the cutscenes and did side missions, paying attention to everything, they'd know that San Fran was the place of The Battle of Defiance - in which the Defiant few used a Terra Former.

I believe this message was on a loading screen lol. But I do think I saw Mel Gibson drive by in his Roller and give me a crazy nod.

The areas with the alien flora and lush environment is where the alien terraforming was successful. It didn't reach the entire planet which is why you see the more desolate grey areas lime the ones you are talking about. Add that to the immense battle that took place in that area (as it was mentioned above) and it doesn't surprise me that there are some desolate areas still feeling the effects of war.

If you watched the first episode of the show, you got a feel for how dangerous terraforming equipment can be.

    ~SPOILERS~

Nolan and Irisa discover a terrasphere, a key component in Votan terraforming technology invented by the Indogene race. When the Volge attack Defiance, Nolan gives up the sphere and elaborates on how it could be used as a weapon. An Indogene could configure the sphere to explode and concentrate the blast down the valley in front of the town. Nolan says something along the lines of anything caught in the blast would be completely annihilated.

So yeah, that's what happened to San Fran. The Defiant Few got their hands on some terraforming tech and turned it into a bomb.

I just figured it was a result of the Terra-spire that was set off there (Coop tells the story in one of the missions). I'm guessing the spires have different settings. If you watched the show, the one they used to kill the Volge left the ground burnt and scarred kind of like San Fran.
