I used the in-game Area Voice Chat. A girl sneezed and I said Bless You! That was it! Solo the whole time! Addictive game though.
Going to have to look for a Clan one of these days! (PC version)

On console it's simply too fiddly a process, so it's not really going to be a done thing. The other factor is that this is a brand new IP and very new game. DCUO has a hefty back catalogue of information that people can discuss and compare to the game as they go along. Defiance though, all we have is a pilot episode and a few weeks of game time which has been most notable for the bugs and patches. We don't have anything to really go on. When you play something like WoW there will always be people offering crafting services, people asking for crafting, people selling rare gear, the experienced players talking about particular facets of this raid or that Battleground, people arguing over best Gear/skill combos for different situations, there is a ton of stuff for them to talk about. Here we have basically nothing. There's not enough information about the show, not enough experience with the game and, if I'm honest, the game content is pretty light. A handful of co-op and mp maps doesn't really open the game up for lengthy discussions, the gear/skill set up doesn't open the game up for debates over best combos, no crafting and a small handful of dailies that are quickly and easily completed. The game just isn't conducive to extensive chat. The closest you get is during Arkfalls, and that's just people yelling at others to stop driving around/stop shooting the skitterlings.
Without serious depth to the content, there isn't that much to talk about yet, and I don't think that many people will be willing to pause what they're doing just to type out a response in chat channel about a random topic.
