I meant it more in the sense that if there is no vertical progression, which is ok, there needs to be difficulty progression. I played GW1 for years and it had no vertical progression (for a while anyways before rep/pve skills) but what it did have were elite areas that challenged players to work together and think about what they were doing.

You just won't get the quest XP and quest reward. The only time you can't get into a story mission is when your group member is in a Solo only mission. Every time I'm partied up with my friend and she does a main story mission, i can go and help her even though I've already completed main story and side quests.

IGN you suck at reviewing games properly. My god.
Only 3 people do proper reviews on IGN, Colin Moriarty, Greg Miller, and Ryan Clemente. Kaz occasionally does well, but he goes fanboy a lot too. If reviews aren't done by the three I mentioned, I usually ignore them, best comment said by Colin "I go into a review at a 5, and let the game take me up hill or down hill, and I never give 9's or 10's without merit" Colin's "second look" on his blog gave the game an 8.5, his gripe was about bugs, and he actually complimented the gameplay saying it left him with an "on going challenge" and he always "Felt like he was under leveled" even late in the game.

When I saw a WoW comparison in the IGN editors review, I felt appauled, WoW, and any other MMORPG should never be compared to a MMOTPS, if it is, the review's a sham. This is a game best compared to the likes of Mass Effect, Ghost Recon, and Borderlands, when you look at the quest structure, how the shooting is, and powers are. It's not even close to a traditional MMORPG.

Yh I never pay attention to reviews, especially movie or game reviews because they are so subjective. My best example is my friends reviews of CoD: WaW. They all loved it saying how fun the game was and how much better it was than other games at the time. I admit the game had certain elements which I enjoyed.

However end of the day I hated the game inside purely because it had no historical accuracy (Sadly boring history student at Uni lol). Now people would look at that review and say why are you being so petty, if you enjoy the gameplay why should you care if its not historically accurate. But it just made no sense to me using reflector scopes in WW2. It made me angry inside that kids were growing up thinking WW2 weapons were the same as ones today (Yh I know weird thing to get angry about). Ultimately I look back on that game and give it bad reviews when friends ask about it because of my opinions.

It is hard to write a review without infusing your opinion onto it. If you want to take reviews seriously the best way is too look back at other reviews by the same person. That way you get to know there tastes and dislikes. Taking the one IGN review out of context causes arguments from both sides. However if you look back and find the reviewer only ever likes playing Halo games, or only ever gives good reviews to CoD games you start to see why they may not like Defiance. It could be something as silly as not liking Sci Fi that could cause this person to give a worse review.

P.S My standpoint, I love the game. So far I have had three weapons disappear and one level froze on me for a while. Yes the game frustrates me, but then I think how much other games frustrate me. FIFA and the little annoying kids on it, CoD and the quickscopers, Halo and the Bunny Hoppers. Hell even Sonic frustrated me back in the olden days because you had to restart the game everytime. Games frustrate me, but then good things in life take patience and a little bit of time to mature. Think of Defiance as a Cheese or Wine. Give it some time lol

Sure, there's some truth to the review. The problem is IGN then turns around and provides very little truth about the flaws of AAAAAAAA games with nine digit marketing budgets like Bioshock Infinite. Defiance is Bioshock Infinite without the hamfisted social commentary and pretentious story and with a much more open game world and a better variety of gameplay and a more developed setting, and yet Bioshock Infinite is the best game ever while Defiance is bad? Until they hold all games to similar standards, they make their own reviews invalid.

Played the game for 2 weeks now, and about 30 hours (ego 600+). First few days of this game was awesome, events where nice like the mobs, only the AI was predictable (like alot of games). But after ego 400 I got bored, the Main Missions felt like random events, because you needed to do exactly the same as the events/side missions. Its not dynamic and there a few base things you need to do (free hostages, turn off generators etc). But in my hours off playing I haven't had any big issues, after patch things were kinda screwed... Ego felt indeed not very important, didn't feel increased power after another weapon, not like I did in Borderlands. World also seems very dead, apart from a few players, not much NPC's (except crashsite), and when they are there, they are just worthless objects.

Waited for the show, watched it and was kinda sad that the game, had absolutely nothing to do with the show. Only heared a few familair names but thats it. Episode Pursuits also have nothing to do with the Episodes (why!?). The story telling is also really bland, no really IN YO FACE story or background, really subtle story/background you can easily so not spot it.

And I'm gotta say, the thread that was about The removal of Episodes Missions (will kill the game), was absolutely right. When you want something exclusive just go something elsewhere, but when you have an online game where you to travel to zones, there has to be anything you can do. New players after the first Episode will have no clue how Nolan got the gem thingie. What, when Season One has ended and you can buy it on DVD, it will be nice that you can play the whole serie again.

But I guess I need to rush the main missions this weekend then. Hopefully Trion will improve this game quickly because, this is not fun for noone. Community is totally killing itself, Fanboys/Ignorant Peeps vs Realistic Peeps (and I guess Hardcore Gamers). And the comparison with Bioshock is totally bollocks, Apples and Peers are also different, the same is with Multiplayer and Singleplayer.

    Have a nice weekend

Agreed. DCUO was way imbalanced in PvP outside of the Instances where you selected a specific DC Hero or Villain.. Even so, I remember when Bane was basically powerhouse. The open world PvP was abhorrent as Speed users were absolutely vulnerable against Flyers and Gadgets (remember Gadgets sitting on the side of buildings, pot shotting at heroes that could do nothing, but run up the building and hit once/repeat). DCUO was so very broken at release, I know because I got it day one (Collector's Edition much like Defiance) and I think Defiance is much more entertaining that will only improve in time.

I think this game is a solid 7.. Maybe 7.5. It's not something that's unplayable, or horrible that is a 5.5, or even disappointing. Afro Samurai got a 7 by Game Informer and had severe game limitations, but at the same time, had great innovations (MGR I'm looking at you for totally ripping off Afro Samurai's free-slicing mechanics). The game release does seem rushed, but nothing is incurable with MMOs. I've played Ultima Online, Everquest (talk about bland), WoW, PlanetSide, DCUO, DAoC, MAG, FFXI and SWOTOR... All of these games have had issues... Other htna maybe EQ/UO. WoW was bland and boring at the beginning requiring only teamwork in instances (like Defiance). WoW was an incredibly dumbed down and simplistic Everquest; I feel very few people remember WoW in it's original state, many people bashed it and called it rushed, imbalanced and it didn't fit the mold of teamwork oriented play that MMO's should.. This was in direct consequence to team based MMOs like DAoC and EQ. In Everquest, you had to have a full party to even level past level 8, unless you were a specific class designed for soloing (Druid, Necromancer, Enchanter).

The thing here is this game is infantile and still finding it's ways. It's trying to break the ground between RPG and Shooter, much like Borderlands, but on a broader scope. Its tough to have drop-in and play, but have depth and constant. It's tough to have a fully developed, MMO world on Launch. And it's tough to make huge tie-ins with a TV show that's aired one episode. The game needs time to evolve and the rating giving by IGN seemed more like a vendetta rating, or one made based too much on emotion and not on gameplay mechanics, or the scope of what's going on here. This isn't a perfect game and needs improvements.. Right now it is average, but in no way is this game meritted of a score in 5's.. In the same boat as "Alien Spidy", "Special Forces: Team X" and "Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams".

As a one time thing, sure.

There's just so many of them. It would have been nice if they mixed it up and had some video recorders, too.
