never thought i'd be happy about my computer crashing. happened a little bit before all this started. hopefully left my character unaffected.
I'm a programmer and game developer, so please spare me the "advise". A quick test should've been ran before server came back on after the first outage, but as we all know their testing team is incompetent and their testing servers don't simulate real scenarios; this was proven with last patch. You don't simply throw the servers back online after they spontaneously go down.. you test and figure out why they did it to begin with. Trion needs to hang up the amateur hour and start doing some real work.. people are getting sick of this crap.. it's not day 1 anymore.. people are losing legitimate progress.. this isn't funny anymore and no would should just roll over and accept the fact the progress they made is lost. This is the kind of crap that happens during an Alpha build.. not a stable release.
personally I didn't even have time to see WHAT had happened to my toon--All I saw was that she was wearing Lawkeeper gear and I couldn't change weaps. So I -tried- to relog and servers were down.
As a former sysadmin, I can tell you that there's no way you can plan for these types of crashes. You're =not= going to get 15 or 30 mins warning--it's gonna be up--then down. They'll TAKE the server(s) down as soon as they see something's amiss, but it depends on how closely they're monitoring things...
We can only hope our friends at Trion have some most excellent backup strategies in place so the damage is minimized.
If you are truly a programmer, and a game developer, then you would already understand that problems like this RARELY EVER appear in isolation or unit tests, Testing for an issue that may or may not exist, without knowing that it potentially exists, and would not exist in a unit test or isolation test, is impossible. Simulation tests only go so far. Some problems only exist in a live environment, or have you forgotten that for the sake of your ranting?
Humans are flawed, as is the code they write. Its a fact of life. Not every glitch and bug can be solved in the blink of an eye.
Why are the servers still down? It shouldn't take this long to restart without patching
I Just want to play the game
I always find it amusing to see just how many developers, programmers, lawyers, and females willing to show their boobs hang in forum chats.
