I like SMS like vot pulsars but they absolutely eat through ammo!
I've found some Assualt Rifles are quite good, although the SAW for pure damage out put is quite high the reload speed winds me up.

I wouldn't say that its the "best", but it is definately a good LMG. Any old shotty will still beat it out in close range, and a good sniper will beat it at long. The only other weapon that I've seen that's better than the FRC Saw is a FRC Heavy Assault Carbine modded to shoot 3-round burst.
But, if we're comparing base models here, then I would say that it is the best midrange weapon.

I still think the best answer to this is "the one that feels right to you". My personal favorite is a VBI-type SMG.

No it is not the best, but for ark falls the DOT is awsome at lv20, but infector at lv20 is amazing, but never see those people on the leader boards most of the time since it glitches the leaderboard for them, smg lv20 can one shot burst on pvp, and any of the shot guns lv20 in pvp can one shot people in pvp. With the right set up a handgun at lv20 are crazy you can do 10k damage a hit, but it a slow on the shot need good aim.
Pistols are easily the most underestimated guns in the game
