I too was expecting large urban sprawls with abandoned vehicles and a general feel of being in an abandoned city you know like the picture in the background of the main page, but yeah i all i saw was gray hills and a few streets. Now the last area in the current game is a ghost town because it is so uninspiring to look at and travel around compared to the northern area of the map.

After almost finishing all of the main and side mission in SF I can say I MIGHT be disappointed but not yet, let me explain.

** possible spoiler but I will try to be generic where I can **

From a lore and storyline point of view I think SF looks just like it should. The defiance few used a teraform spire as a weapon by detonating it. So it was not used as intended and did not fully convert the area. It did however wipe most everything out but not being intended to be a weapon it did not completely destroy the area. We even find out that a lot of the rock outcroppings were actually the remains of melted buildings, probably the taller ones. Being used for a purpose that it was not designed for, the result was chaotic.

Also, we are basically going into an enemy held area so I can see the reason for a lack of friendly bases and travel points although I would have expected more enemy bases to infiltrate and destroy. I would have also like to seen more than one "base of operations" for our invading forces even if they were smaller "mobile" style camps.

Now the reason I might be disappointed is if every city we get to is like this. SF has a very detailed background for WHY it looks like this and I would guess the back story was written before the area was designed. If we go into perhaps San Jose or Oakland or even expand into some other areas and they all look like this, that would be a huge disappointment. I would love to see some desolate urban environments and some rebuilding cities like Defiance. I also believe it would be nice to have a "main hub" area with vendors and the like to serve as a community base.

All this is jut my opinion of course. I am a huge fan of the game and the show so I hope both are able to grow and become more than they are. I feel like what we got in the release of the game was basically a "starting area" that will hopefully grow and progress as the show does but we will see.

So, whether the lore dictated the resulting map design or the map design dictated the lore, we'll never know. Although.. how convenient that it all ended up in a way that required as little work and effort as possible, rather than the artists and designers having to work hard on a detailed urban ruin. While it was clearly out of the designers control (...), just imagine if the "event" had occurred outside of San Francisco instead and the city remained largely intact..!

Fate allowed them to dodge that bullet, to be sure.

Sorry, but the lore is being used as an excuse to create a lame map. The result of that event could have just as easily been something infinitely more interesting.

I have a hard time believing map design dictated lore. Did the map guy sneeze and turn the whole city into pale purple frozen yogurt with bits of city sticking out?

I think it was more of a "SF is going to be a nightmare amount of work. What can we build easily, and how can we justify it through lore?" type of decision.

I can believe it actually. I mean the vast majority of any actual landmarks are absent.

Real question is was the lore the reason for the design, or was the design the reason for the lore?

Can't help but feel like Trion phoned in the entire game. It's just completely uninspired in any way.

But, I could be totally wrong! I would love for a developer to hop in here and say "No no no. We wanted to do San Francisco right. The art guys were chomping at the bit to design an urban ruin. But the fate of SF had been built into the lore from the start and worked into the TV show, and it was too late to do anything about it. We were all really disappointed. That's why we intend on making Oakland look as ridiculously awesome as possible. You guys are going to have your minds blown.".

    That could happen.. right..?

Going to confess, I was hoping there would be a co op map made out of the stadium. Or even a raid setting where you fight a boss who is standing near home plate.
