It really is, if you're running solo then bolt action rifles are 1 shot kills on any non elite and maybe 2 or 3 shots on the elites. Blacklungs take 3, one removes shield, second puts them in to frenzy and 3rd shot kills. Tankers take a magazine but they're expected to, it's not like you get more than 3 at a time and on the one occasion you do you have npc's to take the flak.

Assault rifles are just as strong, half a clip to the head and anything will fall over, pick up the perk to do increase crit damage when crouched and you're unstoppable.

Practice enough with a weapon than you know the recoil and can completely counter it. That just leaves knowing how long a burst you can manage without destroying your cone of fire with whatever weapon you use.

I say this because the amount of ammo you say you use in the OP to kill 1 or 2 mobs is too high... unless the enemy is an elite in which case different rules obviously apply. And to some extent it depends on the mob type.

Other than that, a BMG as a secondary weapon can allow you to easily heal your shield with alt fire and the target link and lack of accurate aiming requirement mean the primary fire is great for clearing groups of things like skitterlings.

Choosing the right EGO power makes a big difference too. Which one is "right" depends on how you play and what you are trying to do though.

    :edit:

Also, each weapon type has multiple models of weapons.

You asked for constructive help and this thread indead seems to be very constructive. So thanks for all the help, you had some nice hints for me guys.
I also sometimes have the feeling, that there are too many enemies and too little cover to handle them. That's rather rare, though.
About the weapons: I go for assault rifles and LMGs, because they are flexible for different ranges, but that's a personal preference of course. I like sniper rifles, but often I found myself fire about four rounds, then switch to other guns because the enemy was too close or jumping around so I couldn't hit while aiming. But others seem to be pretty happy and successful with SRs, as I could read. For a second weapon I chose a Matchlock boomer against those shielded dwarfs.
From just looking at the mods I did not find them very effective, but I did not try though. May be I should give them a chance.
    So good luck out there.

Seems that I´ll give cloak a try then.

Also, I will try out pistols for once. I actually only read good stuff about them.
Which are to recommend? I have the epic Detu Ara from some quest reward (I think) which is a high fire rate one. Or you are recommending slower/higher dmg ones?
If you're giving pistols a try, use the "Wolfhound", pistols are hard to use, they suck unless you crit.

Some general tips for this game:
    1. Shields are important, think about your playstyle and your ability. If you're using cloak, I'd reccomend a high shield capacity with long recharge delay since you can use cloak to start your regen. Otherwise I reccomend the Respark since it's got a low recharge delay and high regen. I also reccomend the + health subtype (can't remember the name).

    2. Aim for the weakspots! At all times aim for headshots/weak spots on your target, it makes a huge difference. Listen to the sound, there's a different sound when you hit a weakspot. Also, turn on damage numbers, it will help you see when/where the weak spots are.

    3. Use cover to get your shield recharging. Use Cloak or Blur defensively (You get hit alot less while in blur and running around).

    4. The abilities are divided into three "types" Offensive (Overcharge) Defensive (Decoy) and somewhere in the middle (cloak & blur, can be used both ways). Think about how/when you use them.

    5. There's no shame in retreating a bit, let your shield charge up and then returning (with a vengeance).

    6. Learn to manage your bloom. Some weapons have horrible bloom, others are easier to handle. The "Stock" mods heps reduce bloom.
