I don't usually watch TV and I dislike even some of the most highly rated series like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, but the first episode of Defiance made me think that it might actually be watchable. Unfortunately, the second episode proved me wrong.

The rating system is done by Nielsen ratings, the god hand of telling most networks what is and isn't working. For those that don't know you watching the TV show doesn't matter, only those selected at random by the Nielsen rating system with a little box attached to their TV count towards ratings.

So basically you have a number of randomly selected people from each age group hooked up to the service. Typically they monitor your viewing amount to judge if your worthy of the status your carrying, as each hooked up viewer is worth THOUSANDS of viewers to the rating system. So they want to make sure that those selected are the TV watching zombie public.

This system does not include: Online viewing, Streaming content, or any other avenue of watched content beyond the randomly selected TV viewers worthy of Nielsen Rating System watch box.

Syfy uses a lot of different numbers to judge their show by not just the rating systems thankfully and if the show can maintain some of the highest numbers (a la BSG) then it will be just fine. Cause Syfy will also look at other factors like online presence, cross over materials, sponsorships, etc as part of the revenue stream and not just straight advertisement, the core of most broadcast income. Basically just using the 'ratings' is a bad way to tell if a show is doing well or not.

That said I've loved the show, even a few rough patches from the Pilot were easy to forget as you got stuck in the world with the characters. The CGI isn't awesome, but hey it's TV on a budget I'll take what I can get.

This easily beats anything else on broadcast TV and most network Cable.

SyFy is doing with this, as TnT did with Falling Skys, and Falling Sky's is one of their top grossing shows when it comes to ratings. Falling Skys started slow, giving you back story, explainations of the why, and how of everything, Hell it even started with a 2 hour premier.

My guess is by episode 4, they;ll be as much action as their is Drama, and by Season 2, we may see Dark Matter in the mix, and Nolan having flash backs about The Battle of Defiance. To be fair, when they showed that sneak peak into Season One, it seems this Season will be focusing on Irisa, and the fued between the McCally's and Tarr's

Solid character development is essential to the long-term success of any show. I for one am happy to see them putting so much effort into this aspect, and not focusing solely on the shiny.

I guess will find out with this 1st season if it is really kickin'....it's an "alright" show for me, nothing impressive.

Totally normal. Episode 2 was never going to have the same viewing figures. I'd suspect that some of those people just DVR'ed it, too. Not all of them just left. If the season continues to get better and better, there's always a possibility of ratings going up. At the very least, we'll know in a few more episodes what kind of trend we have and see if it starts leveling off.

I dunno, I really *want* to like it, and there's lots of things to like (the whole dungeon delve into 'old St Louis' was awesome and hope we get to see more of it!) but everything seems so rushed and forced. The scene at the end with the townfolk marching out solemnly to bury their dead while acoustic Nirvana played smacked directly of the scene at the end the 1st (2nd?) season of Jericho where the townsfolk solemnly geared up for battle while acoustic Foo Fighters played; but in the latter it was much more effective because they spent a whole season introducing these guys and letting you care about the characters yourself, rather than making you care about a bunch of dead strangers. I dunno, it has all the parts that I should love, and the acting is fine, the setting is great, and the effects are good 'nuff, but the pacing and exposition are working against what it needs to do. I am overall enjoying it though and will stick with it.

Its not a movie or a mini series. A really good show starts strong with its pilot to draw in the crowd then you have 2 maybe 3 episodes for character build up. Well at least that's my thoughts, you should never judge a show by its second or even third episode but on the whole season .
