Unfortunately viewing figures mean everything. Arrested Development had poor viewing figures because it was constantly being moved around different time slots and had little advertising. It's success has come through it's dedicated community, word of mouth which lead to large dvd sales and being streamed on Netflix. It hasn't just been "picked up". The community have been campaigning relentlessly for years for it to be brought back but various networks wouldn't touch it as it was perceived to be a flop, not all of the actors could commit and Hurrwitz wanted to do a film version. Netflix have only jumped on because one of the ceos is a huge fan and Hurrowitz agreed to drop the movie idea. The situation there will never happen with Defiance.
Someone mentioned Twin Peaks. That was never supposed to have had a second season. Lynch has said that he didn't want to make another season as he felt the story had been done. Due to its massive and unexpected popularity he agreed to the 2nd season, although he took a far less prominent role
