I wanna know where all these MMOs are with this awesome voice chat system with in depth socialization features everyone is so keen on! I've never been in one of these in my life, the only time the game was remotely 'social' was in a Guild/Clan/Squad/etc and even then it was sometimes limited to business chatter or odd conversations on random stuff.

Anytime I think of social features I just have nightmares of laggy, crowded, city centers with time sinks and micro management garbage. Who wants to stand around sorting bags? Why do you need an AH to inflate your server economy? And how does either make the game more social? Cause you see more "bodies" on the screen?

I just don't see what mega social MMO there is out there beyond say Second Life where wasting time being creative and outside of real life is the total point.

Egads! If they add some player driven sell service that will just make the game spin on it's head! It will be completely immersive then! YAY!

Lets just call it borderlands lite with w/o humor, flat characters, horrible voice actors (srsly ..where the hell did u get these people?).
Ah yeah ..and there's no f'in multiplayer, ..the other people could easily be replaced by generic ai's.
People actually pretty much act like ai's: they either do nothing, fight at an arkfall ... and leave thereafter as fast as they arrived cuz..no ****s are given whatsoever, or act as conveniently-spawning "assistance ai's" during questing.

How is this not a Role Playing Game, you play the role of an Ark Hunter, you do quests, develop a character, follow a story line, explore the open world etc...
pretty much what you do in any mmorpg except instead of using a bow, a staff etc... you use guns,
the fact that it is missing many of the standard mmo features and the ones it has are poorly designed and developed doesn't make it any less an mmo.
This game doesn't have any social interaction because the features that favor interaction are not available or are just so poorly designed that most people just ignore them.

    4. Create factions, not clans; 4-6 factions can be joined by players and allow for open world PvP at any time; allow player bounties, keep killboards (in-game) and institute a land/resource ownership system with bases that can be assaulted and defended (and are manned by NPCs)

Just off the top of my head.
Hopefully with time things like this will be added to the game. I especially like the wanted boards and scrip gambling!!!!

Rift was very social. In fact it's the only tolerable MMO I've played where you could quickly group up with pub players to complete something that required teamwork(rifts). That game had actual roles though and wasn't designed for a single player to solo everything. PvP was great and so was raiding. Man, I sure miss Rift.

Nothing in Defiance is designed like Rift though. In fact everything that made Rift enjoyable is missing in Defiance which is odd even if it's not subscription based. I wasn't expecting Defiance to be a subscription based MMO experience but I expected at least some sort of cooperative design to it other than simply increasing enemy health based upon how many players are in the area.

Because Defiance is missing "roles" entirely.

    I agree.
Consoles likely suffer the worst since so few games require a physical keyboard, and software keyboards kinda are meh. Defiance needs to advertise some brand of USB keyboard that's plug and play so it can work on ps3s, and 360s. Could be mutually beneficial.
"Defiance! Brought to you by Logitech! Buy this USB keyboard, and communicate easier on your PS3, and 360!"

But even then the chat window is what really hampers socialization universally. It needs to expand to hold several messages, and keep them for several minutes. I'm pretty sure it'd remain unintrusive if it did.

I guess in some specefic areas bubbles could pop up in chat, but hopefully not in arkfalls, or such. Last thing I need is a bubble obscuring my view of a parasite leaping at me. :P

Usually, if you ever hear someone talking:
    1: It's a squeaker
2: Someone making strange and unintelligible noises into their mic
Or 3: Someone yelling to their mother/father while forgetting to turn off their mic.

Also noticed that the area chat feature is buggy and often times, you can hear others but are unable to respond
(Yes, my mic and area chat is un-muted).
You at least heard someone. The only time I saw anybody chat except me was when someone came to an Arkfall with that huge truck vehicle.
