Many posts have been made trying to figure out the rates of lock boxes to try to figure out why to buy 3s instead of 2s, and 4s instead of 3s, but none of them can be 100% accurate. The best post so far is http://forums.defiance.com/showthrea...ection-Project where they're using a google doc to track raw data inputted by everyone, but with patches and falsified information this, as well, can never be 100% accurate.
So this post is a petition to the developers to give us accurate rates of the acquired items from lock boxes. There are many reasons why this would be useful to us, but I think we need to convince the developers why this might be a bad thing to release this information.
So let's think logically why releasing this information would be a bad thing. I personally think the main reason this information isn't released is to have a bit of mystery in the game, but I would honestly argue that this is a bad thing, especially when you're considering spending real life currency on something.
From my personal experience buying t4 and t3 boxes, I've been getting better rewards from t3 boxes then t4, and I've dropped about 150 USD already on both t3 and t4 lock boxes. So where is the incentive to buying a 400 bit t4 over a 240 bit t3?
Logically, at those prices a tier 4 should be 2x as good as a tier 3, but this doesn't seem to be the case at least from my personal experience. So what if my personal experience has just been unlucky? How would I know? By making sure I don't know I'm now less likely to buy tier 4 boxes because I have this stigma against them. If I knew I was just unlucky, then I'm more likely to buy more and thus increase the profit Trion makes.
Now I could also argue that I might buy just as many bits worth of tier 3s now, instead of tier 4s. If that's the case then there really is no point in releasing the information.
Now as I stated already, the point of this is to argue valid points against releasing this information, so now that I've argued that the 'mystery' aspect is just as valid as it's invalid, and you could argue that placating the playerbase would be more beneficial then not, then that could be construed as for releasing the information.
So what other points against can we come up with? Maybe the extra work involved in updating the info text for every lock box is just too much of a hassle for it to be worth while? This could easily be argued for and against, but I would say that keeping your playerbases morale up is the smartest long term goal that a mmo company can have.
At the present moment we have new players who look at tier 3 and 4 lock boxes and think, "What's the point?" It requires 8 keys for tier 2, then 24 keys for 3, etc etc, so why bother buying a tier 3? They don't know that tier 3's and higher have better percentages, there is absolutely no information in game that supports this. A new player will just end up buying a whole lot of tier 2's, never or rarely ever getting an orange and will get frustrated at the lack of progression. I really don't understand how that's a positive thing at all.
Now beyond all of this, what is the point in even having more then one lock box in the first place? Was the idea to give players some sort of false sense of choice? Logically one would think that a tier two box would contain white/green/blue, tier three would contain green/blue/purple, and tier four would contain blue/purple/orange. If that was actually the case I would see some real sense in having three types of lock boxes, but instead we end up getting this skewed percentage system that we just have to guess with and/or assume that buying a tier 4 is better, since it costs more.
All I know is something needs to be done about the system, better tool tips need to be added or the entire system needs to be overhauled because as it is now the system gives the player more frustration and confusion then an actual feeling of being rewarded.
