well I fell in the water for the first time and had to swim to get to a point where I could get on land and noticed that I can jump while swimming and swim in the water but I can only swim at 1 speed. I thought it would be cool if we could fast swim

That's only if you're too far from shore. It's a mechanic a bunch of games have in place so you don't swim out into the middle of nowhere.

Shift to sprint or if your on a controller use the sprint button to swim faster.

Its actually fastest..... to go into a sprint swim then bunny hop your way to shore. This is faster then just sprint swimming alone.
