Well if they had more content, less hacking and platform specific UI, it would already be good.

And if they had a more identifiable atmosphere and iconic themes (read: mmo version of fallout 3) it would be a blockbuster.

I think Defiance could have definitely benefited from having a lot more "MMO" in it, especially after seeing the TV series. That doesn't mean it has to lose its shooter elements *at all*, it just means they should have fleshed this game out. As is, it's almost just a combat system demo once you complete the story missions.

Look at it this way.. imagine instead of a third person shooter combat system, Defiance used a typical tab-target (WoW-like) combat system. In such an example (and changing nothing else), what would Defiance have going for it? What else could it offer you beyond some lackluster combat? Not a whole lot, unfortunately.

In my opinion, Defiance relies too much on its combat system, which.. granted, is fun. But can't you have a fun combat system AND a good MMO design together in one game? Back in 2004, City of Heroes showed everyone that an MMO could. Here we are in 2013 taking a step in the opposite direction by stripping Defiance of most everything that makes an MMO a game with depth.

In the end, by shying away from most of the elements (beyond a combat system) that typically make up an MMO (social, crafting, etc), Defiance ends up feeling very much like a one-trick pony. I hope it learns some new tricks soon, because left as is it's only going to last until a more interesting shooter based MMO comes around.. and Trion didn't exactly give any potential competition a whole lot in the way of features to outshine.

When I first picked up Defiance I knew absolutely nothing about other than it was an mmo. I was expecting to be more like a traditional MMORPG but I actually like a lot of whats being done with this game. There's absolutely no barrier to entry which makes the game totally newb friendly and I like how I can team up with someone 2 or 3 times the level I am and we're all equally challenged and equally contributing. Not since City of Heroes sidekick/mentor system have I seen something like that. I also like that Defiance relies on my skill as a gamer rather than a bunch of stats and number crunching under the hood. Making it more like a traditional MMORPG might've made the ga,e more popular on the PC but I think the way it plays right now is perfect for the console crowd.

This game could have used a lot more advertising, most of the people I talk to never even heard of this game, and neither have people on gaming forums etc.
