Think of Vanguard, SOH. Had great potential, but was prematurely released. Things went sour quickly, even though SoE bought it and started putting more money into it. Now, it is limping along on lifesupport that is FTP, while its devs are being pulled away for all the other projects SOE has going on that will actually earn money. Bugs that have existed for yrs are still in game.
The sad fact is, that games have a very small window of opportunity in which to convince the market that they are worth the money and time. The other sad fact is that this game, Defiance, failed to do so, and that window of opportunity is closing quickly, if not already gone entirely. As a result, the game might limp along with a few players, but I doubt many new purchases will happen, so the player base will dwindle more and more.
Somewhat vague if not altogether false marketing convinced some people, like myself, to try and prepurchase the DLC packages, even though there is really nothing interesting worth that money, as the playable stuff will be free, (yes I really am happy I paid to be able to redo the whole pathetic storyline all over again as a new race......? someone pls shoot me now...)
Whenever Trion does get around to releasing DLC, some of us that did prepurchase the packs will return, if briefly, to check out the new content, but almost assuredly it will not be enough to make the game healthy.
The end result is, Defiance will go down as another game that had incredible potential that was failed to be realized. The Devs who have worked hard and long hours will be let go, to try and find another project somewhere else. The bosses, well, sometimes most of them always find a way to come out on top....
Still. Considering the amount of money it takes to start up a game in this day and age, I am not certain that Trion made all that money back, so there might not be too much 'paid" vacations happening any time soon for anyone.
I am not a programmer, nor a coder, but when it was claimed that 150 devs have been working on this game for ages, I find that patently hard to believe. Creation cycle is what, 3-5 yrs or so for a new game at least? up to 7 for an MMO? That duration times the number of devs adds up to some rediculous work hours, and yet all they managed to release was the buggy piece of junk that we are dealing with now? in the words of someone infamous " I pity the fool"
