Does just your character move weird or the whole goes choppy?

I would say there is you're issue. I work for Microsoft as an CSR.

And Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit version will eat 4Gigs of ram in no time. compared to Windows 7 pro 64bit that only requires 1Gig.

Running 64 bit Windows you may want to upgrade that ram to 8GB anyway. Hope you get it working for ya.

Using SweetFX greatly improves the visual experience with the game. It is not something that affects the game and does not violate the TOS. I was a naysayer until I tried it. Here is a thread of it's explanation of it and people arguing somewhere else to avoid it in here.

I'll try to answer everyone's questions, but I may forget some.

First, the stutter or chopping, is like a lot of "pauses" in the game completely. There is no drop in frames whatsoever, and like I said when it is running normally I get around 25-30fps and it plays as it should, very smooth.

I don't believe it could be related to my keyboard, as I could be holding the "e" key down or "shift" and still look around with no issues.

About the RAM comment, I had originally had the 32bit version of windows installed and had the same issue, it was no different whatsoever. Also, I have multiple friends that play Defiance that have worse specs then I, including less RAM, and all they experience is lower FPS, not chopping like myself. HOWEVER, I have always been using Win7 ULTIMATE, whether it was 32 or 64bit, could that be my problem? If so, I will definitely try Win7 Pro.

It's not a video card issue. As I have said, I get smooth frames when it's running right. However, I have tried MSI's Afterburner already with no success.

I'd like to add or question something that was not brought up yet though. As I have said, my PC is a few years old, and I'm sure a lot of dust has built up in the machine. I have attempted to clean it as thoroughly as possible, but other than taking it completely apart and cleaning pieces individually, I don't think I could have gotten it perfectly clean. Could this lead to an issue?

krazyx86, I too have this problem...but I've found something that DRASTICALLY improves it...after 2 weeks of desperately trying.

What made it better for me was setting the game into "low priority" in the task manager. Yes, the lowest priority.

Run the game, alt+ctrl+del, run task manager, find the "defiance.exe" process and set it to "low priority." When you go back in, you should see a major difference. It takes mine from being a stuttering, pausing and chopping nightmare...to actually playable.

My specs are similar to yours:

    Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit
    Athlon II X2 245 2.91 GHz
    Geforce 9800GT 512
    6 gigs DDR3 1333

A couple things to note, given everything I've tried:

    - The game just runs better overall for me in Windows XP SP3. The low priority trick also works miracles in XP as well. However, I was getting all kinds of odd glitches in XP, so reverted back to 7.

    - Older videos card drivers seem to offer up a little better performance.

    Good luck.

Based on what you described, it could possibly be your HD going bad. Get a command prompt open and type chkdsk and if it finds errors type chkdsk /f and then reboot. After that run chkdsk again and see if it still finds errors. If so, try the chkdsk /f again and repeat until the errors go away. Also, go into your disc defrag and analyze your HD for defragmentation and if it suggests it run a defrag.. Just my two cents.

It's also possible it could be your internet connection. Is this the only game on your PC you have a problem with? I had a similar situation the other day and I had to just reboot my cable modem and router.

I will give this a try, thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Gib, I schedule to defrag every morning, and I've run chkdsk multiple times and did have errors before, but they don't show anymore. Thank you for the tip though.
