Classes in Defiance
When I was creating my character, I picked veteran because I love assault rifles and I thought I was going to gain some sort of affinity for them through progression (Not the gun rank but a Veteran specific skill tree). With that said, it would be interesting if each class (Outlaw, Veteran, Survivalist and Machinist) had different paths to follow with perks and active abilities to unlock (similar to the Ego Grid).
Since their starting weapon is a shotgun, their skill grid would have perks / abilities geared towards shotgun affinity and close quarters melee combat.
Assault rifles feel like the most well rounded weapons so veteran's skill grid would be geared towards overall balance and the ability to fill any role; jack of all trades, master of none.
Slow, heavy and powerful. LMG all day. The machinist Grid would be geared towards big power and suppression.
Sneaky, Hard to catch and deadly. Snipers are like the assassins of a third person shooter so their skill grid would be geared towards long range assassinations and stealth.
Just an idea of what some skills / perks on the grid could be.
[Reckless Intentions] - Firing from the Hip with a shotgun increases your damage but reduces your accuracy.
[Bloody Melee] - When you melee with a shotgun equipped, you have a chance to make your target bleed.
[Pump it Faster] - +5% Reload speed with pump action shotguns
[Call Me Jack] - All weapons have increased accuracy
[Specialist] - When you complete a synergy set, you deal 5% more damage.
[Nano-Master] - Your nano effects deal additional damage.
[Power Gunner] - While firing LMG's you take 5% less damage
[Big Guns] - While using a LMG your movement speed is reduced by 20% but your damage dealth is increased by 10% and your damage taken is reduced by 5%
[Shielded](active ability) - Allies near you have 50% of their damage taken transferred to your shields.
[Sniping Specialist] - (the center-of-the-grid skill) When Bolt action sniper rifles are equipped, head shots have a 50% chance to instant kill elite enemies. (this effect is reduced to 40% with semi automatic sniper rifles).
[Escape Grenades] - Your grenades create a small cloud of smoke after detention for a duration. Enemies that walk through the smoke will have their Hud disrupted.
[Long Range Killer] - Bolt action and Semi-automatic sniper rifles deal increased damage with increased distance from the target.
