While it's very nice they're listening, this team hasn't shown us they are able to respond with action. They've taken a step forward from their previous stance of absolute, dead, silence-- but still have a ways to go before matching The Real Trion.

Keep in mind this post comes a full month after launch, and the game itself today is still incomplete. They've built a good foundation through skill-based advancement, but forgot to put on a roof of challenging content to justify the existence of the game, mod system, or weapon system.

We're fast approaching the time where words will only carry them so far. We need results, and we needed them a month ago.

That's pretty much what I'm getting from that blog entry. They've taken note of some requests, most of them being fairly obvious things that anything calling itself an MMO should have, and may or may not implement them. Most of those probably won't happen. Actually, it's probably better if some of those suggestions don't happen.

I tire of the blog communications. I want a developer that gets down into the trenches and has back and forth conversations with the players. For example, telling us you saw the thread on phasing and grouping options doesn't really help anyone (we like to pretend you've seen every thread). However, getting into the actual thread and talking specifics with us about what is and isn't possible, what you do and don't agree with.. that's helpful.

That blog entry.. it's just a lot of words. It's someone up high on balcony telling the masses far below that their cries have reached his ears. And then, getting caught up in the excitement, we all cheer for no real reason, and the figure turns around and walks back inside his castle, and we all return to the land of nothing happening.

    Yay.

    No gif for you!
Pvpers are always asking for more, right up until they move on to another game whether you give them the new content or not, pvp doesn't and never will keep an mmos numbers up like pve will. And while this game may not be a true mmo it's also not a pvp shooter.

My game play is about 20% smoother since the server was down for that extra hour this AM.
I don't know why, nobody else is noticing or commenting, but it looks like a different game since this A.M.

I mean, everything is still in the same places and all, they just all look so *different*.
Logged in, I see what you mean. There seems to be a bit more clarity to the graphics. Less hazey.

The same is true for PvErs, you can keep adding content and they will never be satisfied. PvP brings a lot of players to mmo's too, open world pvp games are still very popular, even those with very unforgiving mechanics (delevel, full loot) and Defiance's gameplay is perfect for pvp.

    PvP is important too.

I like PVP as much as the next guy, but shooter PVE is fairly hard to find in an MMO setting. For PVP there's a much larger range on offer through other titles.

That's not to say PVP should be ignored, but I'm not certain it should be the focus.

Listening to the player base is important. But it's action and only action that counts. The devs need to know which of the many enhancements that players want are actually good for the game, which are bad for the game and which can be implemented. Then Prioritize, publish a road map and start implementing.

Do NOT let the players design the game! Players will usually vote for things that are good in the short run even if they are bad in the long run. Players will RARELY vote for things that are short term bad / long term good. Developers need an overall vision of the game and the ability to adjust that vision to please players but do NOT abdicate overall design to the players!
