What happens when next gen rolls around?

Since the PS4 already has announced that there isn't going to be backwards compatibility, will we have to hang on to our PS3s if we want to keep playing into the next gen?

isn't the PS4 supposed to have backwards compat through Gaikai or something?

I heard that they might add it through emulation later in the PS4 life cycle, kind of like the PS2 classics on PSN. But, even if that's true would we have to buy the game again?

Cant help myself here, but PCs dont have this issue . I am sure there will be some kind of help for this tho. A transfer or something.

"Old" consoles usually take a few years to die after the release of their new system. Since Trion should have all the data stored on their systems I'm sure they can, when necessary port their game over to the ps4 and allow everyone to transfer their characters (possibly for a fee). I mean I still have a ps2 and played through Kingdom hearts recently. I think there were still some ps2 games released in 2011, 5 years after the release of the ps3. However, this is all guessing and speculation.

I think backwards compat (with discs at least) probably wont be available because its expensive (at least thats why they said they got rid of it in the newer versions of the ps3). But who knows, could happen

either way, at the very least there will be a digital download option in the PSN/XBL stores for next gen.

Since the game has to be downloaded and installed to the hard drive (hdd) to play, more so than using the disc (maybe just for DRM means), I'm thinking it shouldn't be too big an issue. Backward-compatibility usually only comes into play for disc-related games. Which is why you see old PlayStation games on the Sony marketplace, old Xbox games on the 360 Marketplace, and even old Gamecube games on the Wii marketplace.

Kind of like when PS3 stopped backward compatibility in their newer models, the old games started hitting the marketplace where people could purchase them digitally and still play them.
