I think Clown said it best - I like to put myself in the game. I happen to be a 5 O'clock-shadowed, brown haired, baseball-cap wearing "bulky guy", so it works well. I've never understood there to be much joy in having opposite-gendered character, and generally only see people with some sort of issue doing so (not EVERYBODY, so don't go gettin' butt-hurt!).
That being said, I don't think anything weird of those who do cross the sex-lines in ways like this. It's harmless and really doesn't bespeak any real oddity, at least in this medium. Someone made a comment about Andross using a female avatar, and that was pretty stupid, like he had to exhert some sort of dominance.
TL;DR version - I wouldn't do it, but no biggie if someone does. Yer all mah friends hurr.

male Irathients are simply not an option, for all intents and purposes they don't exist. Thus I was forced to either play a boring human or alien girl.
Looks more like a robot (a very awesome one!) most of the time, running around in different kinds of heavy armor.
There can be a multitude for reasons for guys playing with girls:
... animations for skills or just for running (definately not a factor for Defiance! : O)
... not rarely the customization for female characters has more and better options
... gear or costumes sometimes look differently on different races and genders (eg. gas masks)
... male characters often can't be customized to look like a normally fit person who's neither on steroids nor a twink
... certain RPG aspects prevent class/gender combinations if you're into RPG in the first place
... many people do not or even don't want to identify themselves with their character
... squishy looking girls make awesome ironclad tanks with shields twice their size
I think covers all ... excluding the whole "looking at a girls back side" argument, since that one's just too obvious.
Not really an issue with defiance as this game is an american game not a *** game industry. The models aren't as skimpy and they are more realistic then most mmos which are internationally developed but first starting in japan/china or what not. I don't have an issue with it until the guy psns me pretending to be a female or any other mmo. just awk imo.
