Packed with money, no good gear.

Ok so the shops have insulting offers, the equipment drops are very rare and random between "lol" and "ok just this time", and the occasional encounter dealers are not reliable way to get equipped before a mission.

Then I see a forum here where people trade gear. On a forum. Here.

    Is this for real?

    Yes it's for real.

This is a shooter first and an MMO second, unfortunately (for those of us used to MMO features).

However, if you read the latest blog entry by the producer(?) you'll see that they are looking into things like Bank Storage, Auction House type functionality (at least I think it was in there) and other cool things.

Any MMO at launch isn't going to have all the features we want, just have to make our desires known and hope they listen.

In the mean time, greens are perfectly viable gear to do coops. There's really not that much of a difference between the colors.

Yeah, what I have to do is to leech on other people's dps and it gets a lot easier. How do I find them? Dumb luck.
I level faster than I get gear so I have to give up my MMO basics.

Oh and the lock boxes, what a joke.

What you say about things "at launch" is true. But it seems more like the equipment that's distributed as it is now is supposed to be poor so you will have to depend on occasional co-op or boosts from the real money store. Then we can't really generalize every game at launch. This one might stay that way for a long time...

So. One month later. Do I still have to play with lousy gear?

Just found my dream guns two months in, so I'd say 'look around.'

Use the lousy guns to run your weapon skill up. Good guns are out there, but will take some time to find. Hit all the vendors including the hidden ones. You'll find them, and you'll pick up a boatload of level III mods as well.

Go to the Need/Want Forum. People sell the rare good weapons there.

Am I just too new to notice? I feel like I get decent drops ( too many grenades lately though ) from Arkfalls...

There are good weapons out there but "good" depends on a number of factors.
Generally the weapon type, say VBI SO-2 Courier has the same stats, like damage, reload time, accuracy etc.
But, as the rarity increases so does the amount of bonuses, 1.15 DMG, 1.15 Crit, 10% EGO refresh on kill.
The better the rarity (Purple, Orange) the more starting bonuses.
Then you have to level the weapon to see the "hidden" bonus.
In both cases some bonuses are crap some are very good.
On top of this you have your weapon skill, and perks.
So, get a Orange with good starting bonuses, level it and get another good hidden bonus, then max your weapon type skill out and mix with complimentary perks, grenades shields for that loadout.
There are good things out there.
