I think that the concept of "playability" had gotten pretty warped during the Nintendo 64 era.
Before then, playability didn't mean the removal of obstacles that could be perceived as challenging. Before then, playability meant will the f***in thing load, how far can you get before it freezes, and how far out of the box can you go to overcome a set of challenges. The pendulum swung too far into the direction of "fun" (fun being the removal of anything that might frustrate, doesn't provide instant gratification, and is to complex that the act of just picking up a the controller does automatically solve). And this has been going on for so long, that gaming seemed to forget the other aspects of the medium that were the real engaging factors. Younger gamers are used to instant gratification and compensation. For a generation that has no sense of accountability (especially online), that's a pretty troubling thing. But there's something healthy about that as a side effect.
Developers have to really be on their s*** and focus on rounding out all of the edges for a more critical set of eyeballs than ever before. It moves the medium forward, and ultimately keeps them honest, or at least accountable.
We're seeing a bit of balance being restored these days with the shift in the difficulty spectrum.
Older design concepts are popping up again and aren't being run out of town labeled as "bad game design" because they don't have a win button. Like I said, things are shifting towards balance but probably not fast enough. Luckily if you're an OSG, you've probably already got a firm grasp on the concept of patience.
You seem to be misunderstanding. The term "Old School Gamer" does not imply that the person themselves is "old" just that they have been gaming since before developers started to cater their design to the lowest common denominator which we like to call "Casual Gamers". Old School gamers, tend to usually be more willing to tackle more difficult challenges and more patient when waiting for problems in games to be solved(we all remember before bugs got fixed at all) if the core of the game is fun. There are plenty of "Old" Casual Gamers so don't mistake old people and old school gamers as one and the same.

um actually we old school gamers dont complain about how hard a game is, we unlike the new gen like a difficult game or scenario, so i fail to see how we ruined games for you young turds lol...we actually want difficulty in our games and not have everything handed to us, me thinks you got yourself muggled up there young grasshopper![]()
yeah i remember the infamous reset with the zelda game back on the nes, boy my dad would get pissed when it did that lmao ( yeah my dad was a gamer too back in the 80's ) and there was no way to fix that either so you had to set the game just right in the console or guess what?, ya just lost all that hard work, or the much hated end boss of the 1st contra lol, yep im definitely old school and proud of it
