It's a little weird to think more deeply than that, but it's 4:30 on a Friday, so why not...
People choose their characters by one of two main schools of thought:
    1) Based on themselves, either realistic or wishful-thinking versions. This is for people who want to closely identify with the character and immerse themselves in the game with the character as an extension of themselves.
    2) For kicks. This is for people who use the character to play the game but don't personally identify with their little avatar.

Most of the guys you see with female characters are of that second variety. They don't see it as weird because it's just a toon they put gear on and look at during cutscenes. It isn't their online self, it's just a game thing.
I'd only expand on that second one a little by saying some of us don't want to see ourselves as our avatar. Personally I don't aspire to be a gun wielding genocidal maniac, but it is fun to play one in games. Having that disconnect helps.

But yeah this is pretty much spot on.

Let me put it this way... I'm a semi old gamer. When I would play most RPGs i would normally choose the hunter class. 9/10 this model is/was female with no choice for the player. I just knida got use to playing that way.

Because playing a female character is HILARIOUS. Outfits get skimpier but afford the same protection as the male versions (any RPG where the armour matters).

This game it's just hotter outfits and not staring at a guys *** while playing.

If it's a 3rd person shooter like Defiance, I usually pick a female character for the exact same reason as the #2 post, rather stare at a chick toon then a dude toon. But when I started the Defiance game, the females were pretty masculine anyways, and most outfits made them look butch rather than sexy, so I didn't even both and got a male toon.

Easy Answer? Because I damn well want to regardless if you call me gay or not. Since you don't know me you not really important no matter what opinion you have of me.

Long answer? Because it creates more wasted posts like these that wastes time trying to overcomplicate the easy answer. No one will accept an easy answer or the Song 'Imagine' would be the world's song of unified earth. Nothing complicates things more than man that insists on complicating even the most simplistic problems.
