They do it because it's fun.
It's a little weird to think more deeply than that, but it's 4:30 on a Friday, so why not...
People choose their characters by one of two main schools of thought:
1) Based on themselves, either realistic or wishful-thinking versions. This is for people who want to closely identify with the character and immerse themselves in the game with the character as an extension of themselves.
2) For kicks. This is for people who use the character to play the game but don't personally identify with their little avatar.
Most of the guys you see with female characters are of that second variety. They don't see it as weird because it's just a toon they put gear on and look at during cutscenes. It isn't their online self, it's just a game thing.

That's my opinion. I think that choosing a woman in game to watch her a s s is which is quite better than men a s s but still ... both are virtual. Do you really ever focused on you character back to get bored with it so you claim you Female Character just to not get bored with?

My char in defiance is a male, but I can say after creating sooooo many characters in various MMO's I'll switch to a female char once in a while to break the monotony. The dudes you gotta worry about are the dudes with female characters that pretend to be females.

It's really not weird until a guy plays a girl and role plays and cybers. But hey, people get out of the game what they will. I play for the graphics, the sounds, and the tasks and content. For the 1st time ever I made a female character. But then, I don't use my avatar as a wishful representation of who I wish I was IRL.
