There is a very simple and scientific reason why guys make female avatars in video games. The secret is, their ***** tells them to do it.

I've seen guys playing guys.
I've seen guys play females.
I've seen females play guys.
I've seen females play females.
I've seen guys play females and pretend to be female.
I've seen females playing guys pretending to be guys.
None of this is wierd. I know some whom have ran scams based on genre and nerds, with me comming from eve-online 'n all, I can't judge. I've seen and actually know females who play and pretend to be guys for sake of just being left alone in the end of the day.
Yet most convincing point I've seen is: As you are, will you prefer staring at male or female arse for that odd 200 hours you spend on your character?
... Should have tought about that BEFORE creating my character, damnit.
I play female characters because if its a game that I'm going to be playing for hours on end and weeks to come. I much prefer to stare at a Females Butt then a males butt.
I personally don't put a lot of thought into the meat suit at the keyboard nor really even the gender of the avatar, I focus on how good (or bad) the player is... that's it. I don't entirely understand why the question of gender comes up at all in MMOs, unless of course you are treating it as a dating pool .. but seriously.. get out and meet someone. Yes internet romances happen (ask Mantai Te'o..) but they are far more miss than hit and way too much of a mine field in my opinion.
I'm genuinely curious why people like the OP see it as wrong? Is it a matter of upbringing or beliefs?
50% smaller hitbox
As an old guy from the south I can honestly say it took me until I was damn near 50 to be able to play a female toon, I guess it was upbringing, I always thought guys that did so were of "questionable manhood" then as I got older, I stopped giving a **** what people thought, and realized that it really didn't mean ****
As far as internet romances go, as I said before I met my wife on an MMO.
