Seriously doubt they could. Keep in mind that prior to the show/game the entire military basically told the Govt to F*** off and that they weren't going to fight for them any more because they were there to protect civilians. Do you really think they could get their military to go and fight a bunch of civies in a town named after the event where military told it's govt it wasn't going to harm civies in their name any more?
E-rep wouldn't take control of a city without permission. Politically it would be a horrible move as word would spread and then no one would trust them and/or act hostile towards them.
It should be noted that on IMDB (I know, so it's not 100% accurate) there is an actor credited for the role of "E-rep guard".
It's episode 9 and 12.
So it seems E-rep will show up in some form on the show and not just being mentioned in dialogue.
It's been 15 years since the war ended and most of the Veterans that fought in the Pale Wars would have moved on to different things. That leaves a whole new crop of of soldiers/marines/airmen in their place whose views on the subject might differ from the other Veterans. Remember it took 10 years of constant warfare in order to push their predecessors into defying their orders.
From the game it is hinted at that the E-Reps have sent stratocarriers into areas before in order to reacquire them. (Though that could just be me reading too much into the fear that the commander was worried about.) While the crew size of a stratocarrier is not known it is probably safe to assume that it could carrier a few hundred combat soldiers/marines, not counting the actual crew itself, along with supporting vehicles/artillery.
Defiance is a town of 6000 people who were almost overwhelmed by a few dozen Volge and 2 pieces of heavy artillery.
So, to answer your question, yes, the E-Rep could take Defiance if they really wanted to.
Except that those new soliders IDOLIZE the Defiant Few. The background material talks about how the actions of soliders at Defiant changed the mindset of the entire world. Heck even in the show 15 years or so since the war ended they still are building statues to the Defiant few in a city that's halfway across the country. They renamed St Louis after the battle of Defiance.
Nolen even comments that they named everything after it.
15 years later the soliders who were around then are now in high level command ranks in the army. Your 22 year old grunt who fought in the pale wars is now a 37 year old major. Look at the leader of the ERep forces in San Fran... He fought in the Pale Wars.
It's like saying "The US if it wanted to could invade and take over England, Canada, France, and Germany."
From a pure X and O's... sure.. but wars aren't just X and O's they are as much political as anything.
I noticed that although the bioman went down, Nolan kept him covered. So I don't think he was completely out of commission.
Also I think the reason Defiance doesn't want to let E-rep in is because it would cause problems with the ideal that all races are equal. As far as I've seen, E-rep is all human.
Where does it say, any where, that the new soldiers idolize the Defiant few? Yes, they changed the mindset of the planet THEN not NOW, there is a difference and there is no information on how the Defiant few are currently regarded within the E-Rep.
But to give you an idea of how mindsets have changed since then, the old mayor that helped establish a town named after then where Humans and Votans could live in peace was willing to destroy that town, and the people in it, to get what she wanted. She idolized them and it didn't stop her.
Just not in the city where the battle took place.
Of those that actually fought most probably left the military soon after the cease fire was called, if not before, like Nolan. That is also not counting those that would have been forced out after the war was over. Downsizing is a pain.
To give an example of what I'm talking about, there was a very, very small percentage of people that served in Desert Storm that were still around when the U.S entered Afghanistan. I think the numbers, if I remember right, were in the very low hundreds. That is counting over all 4 branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Finally, the Defiance movement was not all encompassing in the military. That is evident by Nolan's comment to the old lawkeeper about his, the lawkeeper's, unit being in it till the end. From that it is safe to assume that some unit's fought until the ceasefire was called.
At first I thought he might have been talking specifically about funding for the mag-lev spur, but I think you're right. I don't recall him saying anything earlier about wanting independence. I think if Datak hadn't entered the room, we would have seen a vote; now I'm curious to see what the opinion of the town is.
it is clear and understandable that rafe wants the Mag-Lev spur. Just think about what it meant to an old-west town when the train came there. A train would make it cheaper and safer to move his ore to market. the refineries back east would probably pay a lot more for his gulanite. To Rafe the train is big opportunity.

I may be wrong, but it looked to me that Nolan was not the only one shooting the Bioman.
