Uh...about the only thing 'Shakespearean' in Defiance is the Emo and Juliet vibe they got going on.
If you're at all suggesting the show has even an ounce of intelligent dialogue, you qualify as the sheep demographic that Sy Fy aims to attract these days.

Admittedly Farscape got off to a rocky start, like Andromeda, everything about it was B-rate.
    Fortunately it found it's feet.

The differences are that Defiance had hype and also the over bearing stench of Battlestar Galactica about it. Firefly and Farscape were simply new shows with no definitive direction.

It's designed this way for a reason. Over the years, the most successful shows are (generally) episodic. It's easier for people to come into a show mid-season if they are not completely lost on the plot.

    Stargate SG-1 = Episodic = 10 seasons
    Stargate Atlantis = Episodic = 5 seasons
    Stargate Universe = Serial = 2 seasons

I only use Stargate as an example because it was sci-fi and since it is the same series makes for a fairly even comparison. The general population simply doesn't like serials unless they are short seasons like an HBO series.

Not the only thing. You missed the Satma as Lady Macbeth. Which is much better than the admittedly tired Romeo and Juliet thing.

You say that Defiance is done this way for a reason with episodic approach, however it's clear that the style of writing and the content doesn't mesh well with such a business model.

Defiance should set a goal of life span, say two or three years and aim to make a proper storyline to fill that time frame.

Very good point and well made. Look at the Star Trek series too. They got so many seasons out of it. Lost, Heroes, et all didn't go further than four or five seasons. Stargate had it's highest ratings at the end of Season 7, I believe (one of the best seasons I've ever seen from any TV show.... no, it WAS the best).

Defiance show runner has never done Sci-Fiction show before... the heritage of "writers of..." Battlestar Gallactica only applied for a couple of episodes.

Every show would be better if they put in the writing and character focus and production values of shows like Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.

I am enjoying the TV show thus far. I think they have to spend some time developing the characters and the action comes and goes like any other show. So far, I like what I see...

    I enjoy it.

You just need to take it for what it is: a fun, campy sci-fi show.

I like it better than the game, currently.
