Agreed. Cross Platform between console and PC has huge implications besides the good old "Everyone's playing together 8D". The issues become both social (the communities are quite different) and technical (hardware limitations and input methods). Ultimately what ends up happening in the end is the PC players get the short end of the stick as visually everything gets scaled back, including the view distance, to what consoles can handle, and the UI tends to be cumbersome at best or unusable at worst. You can see the two online final fantasy MMOs for perfect examples of this (The first one had a horrifically short view distance that faded into a grey fog because it was limited to the PS2 spec. There was an unofficial mod to fix it, but you could technically get banned for it by the letter of the EULA.)
The biggest annoyance would be that, due to the LOVELY update systems on consoles (particularly Microsoft) PC would be completely beholden to the console update schedule if they were linked.
I'm not expecting much from the game on PC in the long run already purely because of it's console version linked or unlinked at this point as they appear to be making the console version their primary focus, so if the PC client saw so much as higher res textures, I would be surprised..
