So, is Defiance Any Good?

I just found the game on Amazon for $30 bucks instead of $60 so I decided to go ahead and get it. It just came in the mail yesterday and since I'm on DSL I am spending ALOT of time patching. It just sits at 12h to go and has since last night? After reading some reviews I am wondering if the game is even worth playing?

Does this patch fix any bugs a lot of the reviews mention at release?

Is the ingame community good or is it just dash and grab everywhere with no real communication? I ask because one video I watched just showed people making mad dashes to Arkfalls just to grab the loot, and everyone is standing around spamming a button to pick up all the loot.

Is the item shop a pay 2 win shop? If I don't spend money will I still be able to play effectively? Or will I be at a disadvantage?

Should I just stop the patch and play something else for a few more months until issues with the game are fixed?

You will be able to play effectively w/o ever going to the cash shop. However be aware that the "patching" is really not patching so much as messing things up a bit ...

There's a reason the price dropped so much ... I suggest you read some of the issues in the Tech Support area and this General Discussion area of the forums as well ...

Currently there are some issues with the chat ingame. This includes voice chat and regular chat.
What loot you see on your screen is all yours. Nobody else sees what you see and can't obtain your items.

As to your patching issues. That seems like quite a long time. I remember that the first patch I did was pretty hefty, but the ones after that not so much.

The cash shop is not p2w. Currently it has some outfits and a car and some boosters, that is about it.

Most of the reviews are from when the game just started. Long downtimes and not being able to get on are a thing of the past.

If you ask the overall forum community, you will get pretty much nothing but Troll responses sadly. Despite what Ulfgaard said, the patches have been fixing problems, slowly but surely. They have been known to break something right after patching, but then Trion comes in and fixes it right away (or takes it away until it can be fixed: See Freight Yard as an example lol). For whatever reason, people like to hold onto the past, even if the issue is no longer relevant. If past bugs bother you, that no longer exist (or hold a grudge as most of the forum posters do), then you will hate this game.

In it's current state, the game is perfectly playable. Why you are patching constantly I am unsure, should have only taken you a couple of hours. I suggest you download the client directly from Trion's website instead of using the CD. Might help a bit.

Community wise, you won't see much action in the chat channels in game since the chat is barbaric (you can tell I am a fan of the game, and even I can admit the chat needs a lot of work). Trion has admitted as much, it won't happen tomorrow (as many people expect it to for whatever reason) but it will get fixed eventually. I strongly suggest finding an active clan because it can make the game all the better when you are killing Dark Matter with your clan.

Game is fun with a lot of promise... there are still bugs... but they are being up front about them, if it was a subscription game I'd say hold off, but since it is free to play..jump in the water is fine.

Sometimes it's rage inducing with all the bugs and patches that break things rather than fix them, the "cloak and shotgun" PvP and an ungodly amount of server time outs etc but overall it's a decent game
