I'm not certain what type of "value" you were expecting and how that equates to other forms of entertainment.

I get the sense that some people expect games released now should have months and months of endless new amazing stuff, and you should only pay pennies for that experience. You must raise hell at the movie theater. As if the devs have bills to pay and kids to feed or something...
The expectation is that games build upon there predecessors and improve over time. Defiance not only took a step back in regards to soloable story content but they took a massive step back. The question isn't did I get enough bang for my buck but rather does the game itself offer enough bang for everyone's buck. My question isn't completely about my opinion on the value of the game but also others concerns about the value. I chose to pose my question on here because the more input I get the better. I am glad there are others who feel Defiance is worth there investment, I obviously don't agree but this isn't all about me. I want this game to succeed and any changes I want in the game cant only be what I want but rather what everyone wants.

If the DLC is charging for soloable story content rather than giving it for free will trion make more money than if they didn't, probably. Will people leave the game permanently because of it, most definetly. I could be seen as already leaving the game as I havnt logged in for 2 weeks and don't intend to anytime soon. This decision wasn't based solely on a lack of story content but rather I am waiting till the race I want to play is added to the game. At the same time if the race I wanted was already in the game or was available in the next DLC I would pay for the new DLC and future DLC's as I am the type of person who wants the extra content and see the value in the rest of the DLC content.

So this isn't a question of not wanting to pay for this kind of content as I would be buying the DLC either way. But not everyone will and because of that defiance will lose players because of it. Every lost player is lost potential revenue and lost revenue means less money to produce content. Less content means more people will leave. But only time will tell and the purchase numbers on the new DLC should be a clear sign for the future of the game be it positive or negative and believe me I am hoping defiance has a positive future because at its core it is a great game.

I've always been under the impression that story content would be open to everyone with paid DLC adding things like special missions and equipment and new races and vehicles. I bought Defiance because of this but if Trion is going to change their tune and say that everyone who wants to continue the story needs to pay for that I'm not that dissapointed. Trion has continuously lowered the bar on an almost daily basis and there's not much else they can do that will rouse either happiness or anger. All I can say is: meh.

I'm pissed off at several things, and annoyed at others.
But the general concept of the game is good.
    The general implementation is good.

The world isn't perfect, screws fall out, and bugs happen.

I'll buy the DLC. The devs need to eat regular, and I'm willing to feed 'em for their troubles.

    Different business model is different!

Monthly subscription needed? and ontop of that new "expansion packs" costs money like other online hit and loot stuff games?

No monthly subscription but a one time per "season" fee in Defiance?

Stop crying about DLC's costing money, spite slim to none information from Trion about what they will contain this is an option that is cheaper per "season" or year if you like than other business models...

I'm sure Trion would be happy to add monthly subscriptions and season passes ontop of that to match other MMO's for you WoW kids.

If they actually had the same amount of content as wow, I'd be happy to pay a subscription, I'm sure other people would more than willing to throw money at them if they actually had even half of the content available in wow when it launched. What we got on the other hand is essentially a single player's game worth of content that can be completed in 2 weeks by a casual player.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

First, I've got no problem dropping $10 for new content. I spill more than that on a good night. And I don't consider it to be "greedy" or a "cash grab". I'm self employed, every day I leave my house it's a "cash grab", if it's not I can't pay my bills or feed my family. But I provide a quality service BEFORE I take the cash.

Defiance is not yet a quality service. It's playable, but the bugs are legion and the game is boring at this point for me and for many others. Trion needs to provide the service they've already been paid for before asking for more.

If it's fixed with the next patch I'll drop $10 on the DLC in a heartbeat. If not, I'll find a different game to play. That's the bottom line.

that OP is misleading, i have seen a official trion statement that all expansions will have free and paid parts because they dont want to split the user base as much as if it would be all paid

I really don't think they're going to get anyones money at this point. Not because it's a bad game, but because there are just countless of seemingly unaddressed and ignored issues. If they fail to do well in sales for the DLC I think the game is doomed.
I think for the good of the game they should delay on any DLC, get everything working, add in features and new things the core game will have such as improving the arkfalls, adding new types of emergency's as well as figuring out how the weapon stats etc is actually going to work.
