My guess is something along the lines of defending an outpost (iron demon ranch, the crater etc) from hordes of raiders/hellbugs etc.

Nah. Shadow War is Domination.
CTF would require grabbing an enemy's flag and taking it to another point. Although with vehicles, I'm not convinced that CTF should ever be a game type outside of small map PvP.
