google "defiance ego rating and you"
I found some nice articles about it. I skimmed through most of them, but the gist of it said that pursuits make up a large chunk of the ego rating.
Pursuits should be a means to speed up the process, not be mandatory.

Well, the 'ego rating' is simply a way to describe ones play time...

I don't see why being able to determine the people who play a lot between the people who played with variation would be a problem.

Doesn't that rating determine what type of bonuses are applied on the weapon/mod slots are open? Or am I thinking another rating?
Also, that doesn't seem to make sense since someone who would have leveled to 5000 without pursuits would have played far longer than someone who hit 5k with pursuits.

How? I could run around doing nothing ...that wont account for my time in game. I;d have to be killing stuff

That's the thing though... you can't level to 5000 without pursuits.
I think the rating for pursuits is a good idea because its easier to just play longer doing the same thing, than to have to repeatedly adjust your play style. The pursuits force you explore more aspects of the game.

But then again, I don't know why people spend so much time and effort into it just for a rating. I'm not even over 1k, and yet I'm far more 'skilled' than most of the people who have over 4k. I don't need a high ego rating to know that

But you mean to tell me I can't grind my way to 5000 without these stupid races?

You can grind your way to 5k EGO simply by killing mobs and completing absolutely no quests or pursuits. It will take forever and a day, but you can do it. Every time your XP bar fills and you gain an EGO point, your EGO level increases by 3 or 4 points.

Right now you couldn't do it, however as they add new EGO powers and perks you'll be able to do it I would assume.

I've found a lot of information on each action only allotting a certain amount of ego rating, and yet I've failed to find any on the ego rating of killing things to be unlimited.
    Anyone have a source?

Which is all well and good but irrelevant, this would be like WoW forcing you to do their achievements in order to level. If what you say is true, that's awful and horrible design. Pursuits should be 100% optional, not mandatory for hitting max level.

Well, hitting max level isn't mandatory either.
