City of Heroes also had a pretty comprehensive macro system built into the game as well. You could do quite a bit with it, although you couldn't bind a sequence of attacks to one key or loop attacks or anything like that.

Of course as far as auto powers in that game went, most people didn't use the feature to auto attacks. They used it to auto clicky self buffs.

But anyways, you're correct. It's become commonplace for MMOs to include some sort of basic macro system in-game.

i wasn't referring to macroing, realy, just using a script for an advantage... there hasn't been a "good" macro system in an MMO since pre-cu star wars galaxy. if i could take that macro system and put it into every MMO on the market, i'd go broke playing everything.

but including a macro of some form in the game itself is not the same as allowing you to write your own out of game macro that runs in the background. it's still considered to be using 3rd party software for an unfair advantage. doesn't matter how large or small that advantage is. i think it was in Dark Ages of Camelot there was some super easy to make crafted item, all vendor bought items, that sold back to the vendor for about 2 copper more than what you paid for everything... people were banned left and right for botting their way through 10million of them every hour.

a bot is always considered bannable, even if all that bot does is simulate holding a button down so you don't have to. its still an advantage other people, who aren't running bot scripts, don't have.

as an aside, i played a spines/regen scrapper... buffs were for people who were doing it wrong

It wouldn't be the first TPS to have a FPSish aim mode. Defiance is still a TPS.

I was referring to WoW, which has specifically allowed macros as long as there are no delays and restricted to a single key. This is used by many top raiders and pvpers to help combat lag in spam a key situations. Obviously, you'd want to get clarification on writing a macro for Defiance before doing one though.

I don't really agree that it 'needs' to be in there (can't recall the last first or third person shooter that I used a toggle in) but it'd be a nice option for those that really want it.

Oh no doubt -- there's a big difference between changing binds, or using macros to make certain functions less tedious (I don't know if you ever used TP, but there was a macro that made that power much less of a pain in the ***) and programs that can potentially automate the game. And yeah, most games will recognize those programs as the same thing whether they are simple rebinds or full-blown bots. Best not to use them to be safe.

Regin was OP. (Talking about City of Heroes is making me both nostalgiac and sad :/)

botting via in game macros tends to get patched out of games with macros rather quickly.

botting via hardware macros(like on gaming kb's) tends to get people who do that banned rather quickly.

as it is, new games lately haven't even been putting in a macro system at all, even for text only macros. after the lulzfest that was rift macro of utterly redundant skills, there was quite backlash against them, as a crutch for both devs and gamers to rely on.
