Why does it always take 4 episodes for a TV show to fianlly show a spark?

Finally an episode I could sink my teeth into.
Finally something, something that shows a plot.

Finally I think I can start to enjoy the show and now can see why a second season was ordered.

Because it always takes four episodes to establish plot, characters and setting.

Imagine we got tonights episode as the pilot, nobody would have a clue what was going on. We got here, to this awesome episode by the four that came before it. Do not forsake them!

Yeah but this 5th episode did not create anything but Irisa's character and when Nolan fit in.
The major part was about everything else that was established just tonight.

All of the previous episodes have established and built upon an over arching theme and storyline. I didn't really notice any increase in plot in this one. It could be argued as this one didn't directly refrence the artifact plot established in the previous episodes that it was a deviation to allow character and background development.
