The same old stories

Is it just me or do TV shows tell the same stories over and over again. After watching the last episode of Defiance (a face from the past comes back to hunt a member of the cast) I wonder how long before we get the 'flash back' episode or the 'it was only a dream' episode or even the 'cast regular gets infected by some alien virus' episode.

Can writers not come up with original story ideas.

I feel this is really holding Defiance back.

They did the same with Star Trek. New series, new characters but the same old stories from the last series.

We're in the middle of the season now. That's when the filler crap gets shoveled in to pad things out.
