Well, there were at least a few signs that things weren't perfect early on, even well before launch. The addition of the Red Dodge Charger to all pre-order packages was likely an attempt to boost disappointing pre-order numbers. Selling a year's worth of DLC content in advance at a discounted price.. that always suggested a lack of faith in the game's ability to hold player's interest for very long, likely measurable through a high churn rate in the game's closed beta (what they called 'alpha').
The signs were there for everyone to see, and I certainly saw them. Despite that, I still purchased the game and DLC while hoping for the best. Nobody wants to see an idea they're interested in flopping.
