I hope Defiance doesn't completely kill Trion

Because Rift is actually pretty fun. It's going F2P so we'll see what happens but man Defiance has been an absolute disaster.

I urge Trion to focus on Rift as it is a much higher quality product than Defiance. Don't let this sinking ship drag the whole company down. From the article describing layoffs it sounds like they are going to focus more on Rift as the vast majority of layoffs were from the Defiance team.

In any event, this game never even really got off the ground and severely tarnished Trion's rep. Points for trying I suppose but I imagine everyone in teh company saw this coming with how bad Defiance turned out to be.

I feel sorry for the Developers... all the complaining whining trolls got them fired. Guess that's the price that must be paid for selling an unfinished product on the marketplace.

Lord knows if I bought anything, for example say a dishwasher, that didn't work, I would be quite pissed an demand satisfaction. Looks like the higher ups got fed up with the ineptitude that was plaguing this team.

that being said, I feel bad people lost their jobs. Stupid TV Show rushed them to release... so sucky

To be fair, it was releasing a crappy game that got them fired. Every game has trolls, not every game has disappointed it's customers like Defiance has.

But yeah it was an over ambitious project. But how did they not see this coming with such a shallow game? I mean bad design decisions were just as damaging as the rushed schedule. You could rearrange what's already in the game and make a much better game out of it.

It is normal for game companies to release people after the launch of a game. Mostly devs and artists that they no longer need. Maybe we'll get more info as the day rolls on.

This does not sound like optimizing the team, this is cleaning house due to bad performance. 80% is a lot...

They said Rift will be unaffected, I really hope that is true.

From what I'm reading, the 80% number sounds like it might be something someone just pulled out of their ***.

I have no doubt Trion will rebound when Rift goes free to play. It is a shame that so much money was literally wasted with what Defiance delivered, but they are doing the right thing and taking drastic action to prevent further hurt. Since they are a private company they are able to react much quicker to disaster than public ones and in this case they've reacted fairly quickly.

Trion needs another hit game. They can do it.

Wrong. This done prior to the game launching. In this case Defiance core support and content development staff were cut. There is nothing normal about what occurred today. The article goes on to say that people were fired having not delivered via their performance with Defiance and will thus not be receiving severance packages.

Just in,EGO cap lowered to 50,skitterlings now drop orange,Freight yard fully operational.
I'm not surprised by any of todays events, rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic since launch.
80% sounds high but maybe some of them left willingly after the last few cheques bounced a little too far....

Rift was "affected" before Christmas. Trion seems to be tightening its belt.

It's not uncommon to see teams reduce size after launch, but rarely in the state Defiance is in now.
