I've opened way over 30 tier 2 boxes without any orange. About 5 tier 3 boxes, no orange. Finally opened about 15 to maybe 20 tier 4 boxes and only found 2 orange weapons!

Do you need to be a certain Ego number to get some orange weapons? I'm like 1159 or somewhere in that range and not once have had any luck getting any through buying T3 or T4.
^^Nope! Got my first (and the best) orange with an EGO of 343. On a side note..i got all of them at Top-Notch!

I've bought an average of maybe 1 x T4 per day since launch. I've had 8 oranges ranging from EGO 514 up to EGO 3600 in that time (got 2 oranges yesterday and 1 today after a week or so of a dry spell).
So basically T4 all the way for me, some of the purples and blues are pretty good as well.
I buy all mine by converting salvage into keys and using keys obtained through regular gameplay.
I'm just about Ego 3000 and I only have three orange weapons. And everyone of them I have gotten from a tier 2 lock box. I got my orange respark from a tier 2 back at ego500. An orange infector and an orange det. also in a number 2. The only thing I have gotten from a tier 3 or 4 was crap.
But its totally up to you. But I def wouldn't use real money to buy them. Its a waste.
I have 11 orange Items, my first around the lower EGO 200's from tier 4, and more recently I received 4 orange items from 3 tier 4 lockboxes around upperEGO 2100's. But I have found orange items in tier 3 and tier 2 boxes as well, with the majority of my orange received from the tier 4 lockboxes.
I have bought more tier 3 lockboxes than any other.

I've only gotten 3 orange items and they were all from tier 3 boxes, I was opening loads of tier 4 before I switched and got my first one with the first tier 3 box.
i believe some people just get lucky. just takes time is all.
I have gotten 6 oranges all from tier 4.
