If your PC freezes up during or shortly after start-up of Windows, start it saved and run defragmentation.
Uncheck possible Rapid-Storage-Tech-Software if you run on an Intel. You can check that on later once you've done a clean start after unchecking it.
Fire on next start your Bios up and actually see if there's anything marked that'll shut down your computer on temperature issues and see if those entries are actually set to a working condition (aka if you know your PC can handle more as is listed in there, then change it to the value you know is working).
If your PC shuts down during regular usage, eventually occuring during games, then it's usually due to either an buffer-overflow or overheating.
If you run on Ivy you don't need it and it might even cause interferences with the standard procedure of Win7 locating the valid port for your SATA.
So turning it off for the start-up after defragmentation is a good way to ensure Win will actually point it's ports right on it's own. As said, you can check it on later again.
Let a graphics test be done and crosscheck during that usage of both CPU and GPU (do a run with Furmark for the GPU).
If you're on a Sandy then don't deactivate Rapid-Storage.
