I think it would be funny to get a few of these "modern gamers" and sit them in a room with no internet access. Then make them play the Dizzy collection or,dare i say it,the chuckie egg games.

Happy Hunting!
No pun intended but who remembers/experienced having a friend over or going to friends home with the specific mission being, beating "X" boss because you just couldn't seem to do it? Not ashamed to admit I have been in that situation before lol.
Oooooh.......put the ones who weren't even 16 when the original Resident Evil came out.........then lock them in a room with no internet until they can beat Resident Evil Director's cut. And all they get outside of the console is a notebook and pen.
Makes me remember when I used to write walkthroughs for some games.
When Lunar Silver Star Story Complete came out......I beat it in 3 shifts while making notes of everything and taking images of the screen. Had a walkthrough out 2 days after completion.
No shame in admitting it. That's how those games just were. They made people happy not just by playing it, but by the challenge of conquering it. Those are the ones you end up wanting to go back to even after years because they had excellent replay value.

Modern gamers? I was looking up hints for the original Bard's Tale on Fidonet. But yea, it seems like patience to work out puzzles is becoming a lost art. All part of the need for instant gratification I suppose. But in their defense, things like the data recorders are a PITA, nothing like searching for a needle in a haystack with enemies respawning around you every 60 seconds.
Great games used to provide you with a nice cloth world map, and knew that you'd provide the pencils and a pad of graph paper to make your own maps of the dungeons.
The Quake video was sublime. We're old.
That's why even when a game could be beaten in 2-4 hours, people would spend days-weeks on it. Those started to dwindle after the SNES and Genesis left the market. With the PS1 there were still games like that.....but they started thinning out.
But the developers did start to shy away from them due to "increasing market potential". They figured quick easy games would sell to more people.
This was also in part due to lack of original ideas.
Hey, I'm not old.....yet.......maybe.......
I still act like a kid sometimes.......reading manga, playing video games, watching anime, wait..........I still remember the first anime transitions to the US and not using a computer for HS reports........crap that means I AM old........
@Synra post#30
When you say Final Fantasy 3......did you mean the US Final Fantasy 3 (it was actually Final Fantasy VI but renamed to III in the US)?
I've gone back to replay that one a few times myself. I found better than VII often (I hated the visuals in that "cutting edge 3D" game).

i agree, im from the original nintendo and atari generation lol...when i was a kid i a lot of gamers thought it was badass to figure something out before anyone else, then we'd keep it a secret and all and watch everyone else squirm as they try to get passed a tough boss ( contra, final fantasy, even the original metal gear solid, yes im old lmao ) or find some rare items...i truly miss the games of old cuz sometimes you didnt have save points or memory cards, just passcodes for a specific level and had to write them down or worse if you turned the game off, then you had to start all over. Games really took a bad fall in the mid 80's when devs started introducing cheat codes into their games, most were easter eggs, but when that happened, it was like an explosion, now youd be pretty hard pressed to find a game that didnt have a cheat code of some kind in its programming.
im the kind of gamer that loooooves challenges, ( myst, the ff1,2,3,4...even missile command for the atari lol ) but today there just isnt really any game out there that poses the kinds of challenges that make you sit back and go " wtf!?, how the hell do i get passed this? " cuz today you have a lot of kids that just want to get the game done and can google any cheat code, or whatever to find what they need...this generation of gamers sucks cuz they WANT to cheat, have stuff handed to them, and if they dont then they cry to devs to " dumb " down the difficulty to make it easier for them so they dont have to think their way through a puzzle or any given situation. I use to be a huge subscriber to nintendo power back in the day, just cuz i wanted to keep up with any new games that came out, then when i saw they started putting cheat codes in their mags, i quit subscribing...i do have strategy guides but theyre for my rpg games cuz most of the cool stuff you either have to make or find, im a completionist freak lmao...especially my rogue galaxy rpg for my ps2, but i could care less about cheat codes lol
all in all, this generation of gamers has it waaaaaaaaay too easy for my tastes, even with most of my games i have to play them on the hardest difficulty to even have any kind of fun or ( dare i say it ) some kind of enjoyment lol..if devs want to make a great game, then they need to make a game that has that old school difficulty trade mark to it lol
dude metroid, i haven't seen that game years. thanks for the flash back. now i will find myself running for a q'tip and some windex
