    Whole day of downtime?

I don' usually get upset, but with the servers being down the whole day this 'emergency maintenance' thing is really starting to get on my nerves. I have always defended Defiance against naysayers since it came out because I know that MMO's take time to find their stride and have all the kinks worked out. It really is a great game overall, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly since launch. However, most problems are usually fixed a month or two after launch.

But with this latest patch and fixing the duping of items, its getting to the last straw. Ok, so a few scattered groups are duping items. It happens in every game. I understand the company wanting to fix it. However, other games never take down all of the servers and punish everyone else who [I]isn't[I] duping as a result. Not only that, but taking a whole day to fix the issue when it was arguably a small problem in the beginning? Not to mention the updates constantly reminding us that the only update is not even having an ETA on the completion...three times today now.

I understand growing pains of MMO's as they are my main genre to play. But the growing pain season should be behind us, and large downtimes and problems like this should have been worked out long ago. I respect the team at Trion for making a great game and doing their best, but it is getting to the point now that server downtimes like this should be a thing of the past.

Yeah, I'm not one for negative comments and am pretty understanding too, but I got to wonder what kind of QA is going on here with these updates?
It puts the lotion on its skin...

Games are getting bigger and bigger. While I don't like not being able to play something I have payed for it is taking longer for games to be patched and such as we start into the next gen of games. It will be up at some point and the game is worth waiting for. Hell, Battlefield 3 still has it's problems and that's a first rate company. So give it time. More then likely when they patched up the bug and stuff it caused a few more problems

This just shows the need for a public test server but with SOE and MS involved that seems a long shot. But as I play PC only I would jump at the chance to aid in bug control. I was in the last beta and fell in love with the game and then on release day had patching problems first and when that was resolved the Epic lag set in, but on the second day things seemed to settle out. With the problems that seem to come with every update, no matter how small, I begin to wonder just who they have testing these patches and if they stopped the layoffs to soon. It seems a little rushed to keep up with the TV show and with the loss of key people in the Dev infrastructure I do not see how they can keep up this pace of updates and patches. We had one on the 20th to address some mainly PvP problems and now this one to get up to speed with the next batch of shows that brought on its own set of problems. But as with SOE and SWG, I will still be here till they turn out the lights on this game hoping for the best and taking what I get. As I don't write the checks at Trion I can't tell them how to run their game, but as a consumer of the product, I have the right to voice an opinion.

I understand games are complex. I've taken several game programming courses and even the simple games can get fairly complex. I also understand that no game is 100% perfect. The difference is how a company 'fixes' a game. I agree with Jesse's comment about their QA. Patches are usually tested before they are released and any problems encountered are worked out prior to the patch being put out. At this point in time of Defiance, the track record for patches is 0:2. The first patch broke the counters for challenges and required maintenance, however that lasted only a few hours. This one also required 'patching' for the patch but the downtime has been almost a ful day now.

I guess my main point is that I would rather wait another week and receive a patch that doesn't need fixing itself when its launched.

I agree. I'm not giving up on Defiance at all. I'm not going to stop playing it because of another pad patch. They have had a rough time with layoffs and having to keep up with an ongoing TV show. And honestly, up to this point they have done really well. I can also see the potential that it has and will hopefully reach over time.

To help with QA, it would be great to have the PC crowd able to sign up to test patches before they are released to the public. Just have them on a test server and see if any problems pop up, then spend a week or two to work out the issues then release it publicly. This would help take some stress of the developers by giving them time to address things that players find out before hand.

It's delicious for me. I don't even need to stir up discontent today, it's running all on its own.
